A key passage from this article lies in Zelensky’s words on what Ukrainian intelligence is picking up. Bear in mind that Kiev’s intelligence arm was very well respected by the US and wider allies under the Biden administration:
“It can happen in summer, maybe in the beginning, maybe in the end of summer. I do not know when he prepares it. But it will happen. And at that moment, knowing that he did not succeed in occupying us, we do not know where he will go”.
From the article: Zelenskyy said he had viewed documents indicating that Putin was “preparing to train 150,000 people” in Belarus, a staunch ally of Moscow – and that he had shared that intelligence with allies.
Now, this may be used by Ukraine as a way of encouraging Europe to focus more on defence and fill the US void, but it fits well with what other intelligence agencies have been saying this week. A ceasefire will only empower Putin to rebuild and recalibrate. It will not solve the conflict nor will it make Ukraine safer, and nor will Russia go home satisfied. It will only serve to strengthen Russian armed forces and give them the breathing space to go again harder.
The question is does Europe have the stomach for a fight? At the minute, I would say no. The further west you go in Europe, the more ignorant populations are to the threat of Russia. What if Putin inches into Lithuania? Will European leaders push for war, and with it the decimation of their economies and way of life, to save them?
For Russia any impunity is a drug, and any manifestation of weakness – new temptation for escalation. Russia understand only language of the strength.
Right now USA created for Russia the biggest buffet of Western weaknesses of all-time. I’m not remember any other time period when West lured Russia and it’s allies to attack (in all meanings) that right now.
If before now WW3 was „almost certain“ then now I completely not see not a single way-out of such possibility. West is paper tiger, USA sold-out democratic countries to essentially fascist regimes, technological lag between democratic and authoritarian countries became minimal, and so on and so on.
By why exactly reason authoritarian countries should stop pushing the weakened west and restore feudalism? There are no such reasons. More so after de facto fall of USA values-culture as completely theoretical or outright lies. From now something like Superman is no more than inappropriate parody.
This is what the world should expect when the rule of law is made null and an illegitimate administration appears.. i am in shock that so many Americans are so uneducated.
Yeah because when you broker a “peace” deal where Russia gets rewarded for stealing. Why would Russia stop land grabbing when the West won’t put their foot down to punish it?
Trump has walked away from NATO. For the next four years, at least, it’s dead. This is a generational opportunity for Putin (and perhaps others.) Catastrophic war is now more likely than not.
They do want to continue to attack further into Europe. That’s why it is essential that the US and NATO remain united regardless of what happens in Ukraine. Only one more non NATO country on their list after Ukraine, Moldova then it’s on to the baltics.
