This doesn’t end well for us in the book Seveneves

Currently a 2.3% chance of hitting Earth, and a 0.3% chance of hitting the moon.
Saved you a click.

Excellent work by „rocket scientists“ to have a numbering system that can be confused with calendar dates.

Okay the moon is pretty fucking far away, considering the size of the asteroid itself, so that sheds some light on how big of a window we’re working with here.

Plz hit us already. We are literally begging you.

This asteroid will probably miss
As it goes by it will blow us a kiss
But sooner or later
There will be a crater
And that we can never dismiss

For some reason I’m thinking that hitting the moon could be worse.

I’m hoping for this. Would be a heck of a show if it hit the near side, and people would be traveling to see it at night, like eclipse travel. Just please, don’t smack an Apollo landing site!

If this was D&D and I rolled a D100, the asteroid would hit us on a 1 or 2…which isn’t crazy odds but that 1 can sneak up on you when you least expect it.

Stupid question: has the nasa or the space force an anti asteroid program?

It’s okay. The path on which it is most likely to hit is populated by poor people. New York and D.C. are not going to be hit.

**TL;DR:**
• An asteroid that’s big enough to wipe out a city has a 1-in-43 chance of hitting our planet in 2032. But there’s an even smaller chance that it might crash into the moon instead.
• A collision with the moon could release more energy than 340 Hiroshima bombs. The effects of this unlucky collision would likely be visible from our planet — although we, ourselves, would probably be unaffected.
• The probability of the space rock hitting either Earth or the moon is still very low, and an international team of scientists has been granted emergency use of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to learn more about the rock’s size and trajectory before it leaves Earth’s view for the next few years. The asteroid 2024 YR4 measures an estimated 180 feet (55 meters) across and is traveling at nearly 30,000 mph (48,000 kph), according to NASA.
• It is too small to end human civilization, but it could still wipeout a major city, releasing about 8 megatons of energy upon impact.

Oh great… Now it’s got a stupid name too, just like the parade of planets and the comet of the century .

For people who are worried about the asteroid, you should spend some time at the casino. You have a better chance of getting rich than this asteroid does at hitting earth.
Putting all of your money on 00 at a roulette table gives you a 1 in 38 chance, for example.

Well that sucks. I was planning my “Welcome the Asteroid to Earth” trip.
Well guess I need a new 10 year plan now.

Can we just do a weekly megathread for this thing?
Every space blog is going to pump these out nonstop.

I mean…it’s like 50% of the reason the moon is there in the first place.

Can’t we send satellites to crash into the asteroid at regular intervals to shift its trajectory like we did with the DART mission?
