President Trump has said that he has spoken to President Putin about the war in Ukraine in the first confirmed talks between the two leaders for almost three years.
Without revealing details, Trump said that he was “making progress” towards bringing peace to Ukraine. “We want to stop the Ukraine-Russia war,” he said on board Air Force One.
Mike Waltz, the US national security adviser, also confirmed that Washington was talking to Moscow. “There certainly are a lot of sensitive conversations going on,” he told NBC.
He said that Trump would be willing to use sanctions and tariffs against Russia to try to force Putin to the negotiating table.
