      They will run a Trump speech through a Shannon filter and determine there is no actual information. The SN ration would likely cause them to doubt their own equipment.

      They’ll move on to the Dolphins and White Mice who likely have more interesting things to say. The Fjords of Norway will impress them.

      Depends at what range.

      * At greater ranges we than the below we start to be a victim of the inevitable physics of the inverse square law, diffraction limits, etc..
      * More than a few hundred light years away they will likely not see us at all, or at best might be able to pickup some odd chemicals unlikely to be of natural origin we are putting into the atmosphere, e.g. industrial-level pollutants.
      * Closer than 100 light years they MIGHT be able to see some odd radio signals (if they have a massive dish that happens to point at the tiny needle in a haystack area of our solar system – i.e. they’d have to be surveying every area of their sky, also assuming we are not blocked from their line of sight by dense regions of the milky way) and they MIGHT figure out how to descramble those into meaningful pictures and sound.
      * Closer than 50 light years away they will probably know that we are a fucking mental species determined to kill each other, and will decide to keep the fuck away.

      All of this adds up to why it is also unlikely we will be able to find them!

      Mostly they would be surprised, but after analyzing our signals they would realize that there is no intelligent life here.

      None. There is no intelligence here. It is a planet filled with idiots that are killing their own home and each other over „monopoly money“ to see who can have the most of it so they can be the biggest ape on the space rock.

      Atmospheric spectrum readings for manmade chemical traces. If their tech can pick it up, faint light on the darkside of the planet.

      Radio/broadcast signals are more just a buzzing once they’re out around Pluto, finding the radio messaging back and forth to Voyager(s) would be infinitesimally difficult to find, let alone pick up.

      They would have picked up our radio waves long before they entered the solar system

      The most likely would be the presence of artificial light on the dark side of the planet. *We* can already detect differences in light transmission, reflectivity, and star dimming (from planets in other systems eclipsing their stars) well enough to roughly calculate the composition of atmosphere and size of those planets. That information would take many years to reach very far, but an advanced race within a reasonable number of light years shouldn’t have much trouble detecting the same from our own planet and noticing the anomalies. Of course, they could probably also detect radio and satellite transmissions as well but the question was about what they’d *see*.

      Our math, and our progression into higher levels of math. I’m sure any species capable of traveling here would have ways to interpret our math.

      If they are observing us from 20~100 light years away which would be extremely close, and assuming they have more advanced detection than we do- they would be seeing broadcast media from 1930s ish. If they examined and could get direct spectral imaging of Earth they would see CO2 and Methane in a Nitrogen and O2 atmosphere with water- which is a sign of life.

      If they watched us, as time went on they could see the rapid CO2 changes and of course increasing transmissions of radio waves.

      To think that space aliens are looking for us the way we are looking for them seems far fetched.

      I think it’s going to something that shows up on spectrometers as those have the greatest distance. Perhaps some artificial compounds that only occur artificially.

      Second would be radio transmissions. They would detect that long before they observe any physical surface or orbital items.

      Should they found much earlier our radio/tv transmissions? We are transmitting since more than a century. Even at a percent of speed of light, it should be “visible” over proxima centauri easily

      Look, i know we all want to take the scientific high road and bury our heads in the sand we had airlifted into our „evidence based“ ivory towers of peer review, but one must at *least* consider the possibility that we are examining this whole question from an extremely biased and „human centric“ perspective.
