Oh, there we go again. How is it possible that all these so-called science journalists feel the need to use the same lame hyperboles again and again? Things that don’t quite add up are not a crisis, but a sign that you are about to learn something new. Stop with the fucking Fox News sensationalism. There is no crisis in cosmology, there are still great opportunities to discover new things: the very opposite of crisis.
There’s two main tactics for measuring the Hubble constant. One is directly, by observing ’standard candles‘ — that is, objects with predictable luminosities such as Cepheid variables, type Ia supernova explosions, and red giant stars — in galaxies and determining how far away they are based on the apparent brightness of these standard candles. Coupled with how fast they are moving away from us, which can be derived from measurements of their redshift (which says the faster something is moving away from us, the more its light is stretched into longer, redder wavelengths), astronomers can use the Hubble–Lemaître law to calculate the Hubble constant.
Someone should check on the cosmologists, they seem to have a new crisis every week…
All headlines are click bait. In our online world, journalist’s reputations rely on clicks. Their articles themselves are actually informative but clicks equals reads. Sticking in an ominous word (crisis here) in the headline causes engagement which causes reads. People pass right by otherwise.
