Some phones have a thing where they replace the moon with a series of pre-recorded images, slightly blurred.
I can imagine that forming from artifacting, and the „outline“ the moon has points me in the same direction.

I’m so glad you posted this. My family kept asking me what that orange light by the moon was. I told them it’s probably Mars. This conversation happened hours ago. I ran across this and showed them.
