In WW1 many Armenians fought alongside the Russians and ethnic cleansed huge parts of east Anatolia. The main targets were sunni muslim kurds but also Muslim Turkic people.

According to some researches a third of the whole muslim population in that area was murdered.

In parts of agri only 1/10 of the Kurdish population survived the massacres

in 2017 there were 66.8% Turkic people and 33.2% kurds. It’s always been a minority of kurds, they are not the majority there. Kars has always been Azerbaijani, now most of them speak turkish but they are of Azerbaijani origin.
