One fifth of all wine sold worldwide could be fake. Now tech similar to MRI scans and gas-smelling, aroma-analyzing equipment might yield the answer.
Earlier this year, French, Italian, and Swiss police forces teamed up to bust a ring of wine fraudsters who were selling counterfeited Grand Cru wines (the premier designation of quality in French wine) for [up to €15,000 a bottle](https://www.europol.europa.eu/media-press/newsroom/news/wine-counterfeiters-busted-in-italy-for-selling-bottles-of-fake-wine-for-eur-15-000). The gang was estimated to have made more than €2 million from the racket.
Wine fraud can take various forms; culprits sometimes combine lesser wines to resemble bottles of top-tier vintages (as Kurniawan did), or sometimes simply pass off a cheaper wine as a more expensive one by faking the labels, cork and foil. In some instances wines can be diluted or altered with cheaper substances, occasionally even harmful chemicals.

While interesting in the abstract sense, people who can drop this kind of cash on a bottle of wine already have too much money. And I highly doubt that they can tell the difference between real and counterfeit vintages.
This reads to me like another example of the tiered justice system in the world – crimes that impact the wealthy are always prioritized over the crimes that impact the working class. I’d rather read about technology that provides free vaccinations and preventative health care to millions, rather than expensive solutions to a „problem“ that only impacts the 1%.

Headline is entirely false. No one is faking 100-200 dollar bottles of wine and “your” wine is very very unlikely to be 10k a bottle.
Bullshit wired clickbait as always. They need to be banned from this sub.
The only real difference between a $100 bottle and a $10,000 bottle is the status of being able to say it cost $10,000.
So I’d question the extent to which it’s really even fake when the main purpose (the price tag) is real.
If it made me drunk, I don’t care if it’s a fake wine, or if it was distilled from the blood of a hydra and grapes from Dionysius armpits.

It’s *likely* fake… A lad I knew who worked in a somewhat fancy restaurant said that they used the same wine for the cheap and the expensive options, no one ever ordered cheap though. He also said that it wasn’t the only restaurant he’d worked in that did the same.
