For a country whose massive workforce has helped push towards a rapid economic expansion, falling birth rates spells pessimism.
Wang Feng, a professor of sociology at the University of California, Irvine, and a leading expert on demography, aging and inequality, told Newsweek that the population decline in the world’s most populous country is historical and unprecedented.
China is now trying to boost birth rates by making fertility treatment more accessible.
Beijing has already passed new policies limiting abortions that are „not medically necessary,“ Greenlagh explained
„Some localities have refused to allow men to have sterilization procedures, vasectomies, suggesting that around the country local officials believe that national policy now calls for limiting contraceptive procedures in order to encourage as many births as possible,“ Greenhalgh said.
but, according to Greenhalgh, the demographic decline in the country is likely to continue unless the government takes more effective measures to counter it.

At what point does the CCP just straight up ban ALL forms of contraception, not just the permanent, surgical kind? I’m no economist, but I believe you will see a sharp increase in crime and poverty when that happens.
What about western governments? I fear they are going to start waging a war on contraception as they start seeing their own *working* populations threatened.
Actually if they can manage the decline, that’d be incredible. Maybe China can lead the way. I believe they don’t exactly have Western style retirement.

The problem with all these central planning structures, including in the West, is that they aren’t resilient. Infrastructure, healthcare, schools, pensions. They rely on a current trend projected decades into the future.
You can’t have it all.
When people start working, they don’t want so many kids (if any).
Pretty much the same world wide.
China could just send ships to Brownsville, TX, and start loading up immigrants and shipping them over. They have whole towns empty they could fill up. Then BOOM, instant population boost.
Then, when America’s population starts declining, but we still have our imaginary „immigrant invasion“ and refuse to let those folks in, China can reap the whirlwind of our ignorance by taking workers right out from under us, as we watch it happen, and applaud China for doing it.
Human cloning will probably be the solution to population decline.
Maybe they should stop doing forced sterilizations on Uyghurs.
It kind of seems like birth rates are decreasing in most of the world because people don’t really like living in this system that seems to require endless population growth.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to have extreme tax cuts for those starting and maintaining families? It’s as if they are purposely avoiding the source of why people aren’t getting pregnant.
If you want people to have kids then make it easier for them to afford, in both time and money, raising a family. The issue with that is it will cut into the economic productivity that these countries are so desperate to maintain. A productivity that is counter to the balance tending nature of the entire universe.
Ultimately, this comes down to governments functioning as corporations. The purpose of a government should not be to maximize economic productivity, it should be to maximize the happiness and freedom of its people.
Promote a life of family, community, and balance.
The only reason so many young people are needed is to support those that can’t work, ie the old and the infirm.
Honestly I’d expect China to in the end figure out how to “solve” that problem before they figure out how to solve more childbirths.

Personally I don’t think availability of contraception is what causing the birth decrease. We have baby boom when people have nothing else to do then to have sex (time) and it’s also affordable to do so. With current entertainment that we have everywhere, no real child care available and the crazy inflation, no one have any real incentive at wanting to have to take care of another human being.
I expect China to be pushing hard for artificial uterus technology.
The best way to have more citizens is to make them in series. With raising said kids defined as a citizen duty or some such.
As in: at a given age you have to raise a kid of yourself or someone of your immediate entourage or face fines and/or jail time.
Just ensure your population replacement.
These people think they have unlimited resources to support this population growth, when in reality they should learn to deal with decline which would enhance per person living. It’s amazing how well the world worked with half the population it has now.

tl;dr It’s not and it won’t because it’s not possible. Many countries have tried to halt population decline with no success.
It’s almost as though people don’t appreciate being taken advantage of to embolden and enrich the 1%… Who ever could have predicted such things.

If i cant afford 3 kids i wont have them and if i do have 3 ill be in a bad financial situation for most of my productive adult life.
I think nations rising are going to struggle with far greater extremes of the boom and bust of births that we see in developed nations. For Europe the whole process took over a century to play out. For much of East Asia it was within forty years.
This creates really lopsided population breakdowns. Rapidly growing, then aging, then contracting, all within living memory. This isn’t to discount the challenges a Spain or Italy are dealing with, but the severity in China is so much more. it is hard right now for our brains to imagine a country emptying itself going from 1400M to 700M over the next 80 years.
Anything China could do to address this is so massive and long term that they’ve already run out of time. How does a nation simultaneously sustain itself while going through a contraction of half its populace?
Remember guys -when propping up an unsustainable economic system that relies on women breeding for you, their rights to bodily autonomy are the first to go!
We really should be better at dealing with population decline. Its good for the world and for all of us long term.
Thank God China had thr one child policy. Just wish the rest of Asia and Africa also followed.

As long as Xi is in charge the trend will continue. If they want people to be happy and comfortable having kids, the government will need to intervene with a major social safety net. The problem is that Xi is completely against anything that smells like it could make people „lazy.“ He’s going to systematically kill off the country with his backwards policies.

I can tell how most people in this thread has never had to bear the brunt of raising a child and think throwing money at women specifically will make them have more kids. Ever consider how mabybe both women and men just want to opt out of having families because it’s a ton of work and mental effort.

Yeah it’s not gonna work. 99% of the current generation of parents don’t have siblings and so don’t see any value in having multiple kids for the sake of their kid having a sibling, and they sure as shit can’t afford more than one kid due to insanely high cost of living and raising a kid with all the education and other expenses. China is gona have to live with their population shrinking a bit before it finds a comfortable level.
