I spent a summer helping out at Schweizer Tafel. We drove a van from Coop to Migros to Aldi to Lidl and picket up all the stuff they were going to throw out (minus the rotten stuff of course).
We moved around 1 to 1.5 tons of food per van per day. And there are 5 vans for N/W Switzerland alone. It‘s a bit upsetting to see what gets thrown away before someone even buys it. Sometimes they throw out good food just because they received a new delivery without selling all of the previous one.
If you ever have a day off, I highly recommend volunteering there. They always need people. It‘s extremely interesting and quite fun!
