You can choose not to have an EV-related plate. I read that many Porsche owners choose this.

In all likelihood you’ve found someone who’s been shittalking EV’s for years, but finally realized they’re better cars (or more affordable cars with how Norway’s tax schemes works, a base BMW 520d Touring is now twice the price of a base Tesla Model Y) and then finally gave in and bought one, but felt the need to have a «fossil» plate because they think they’ll fool their neighbors.
Some people claim it is because they think certain combinations of letters look better, but that’s the weirdest thing excuse ever, but I do see a lot of _rÃ¥nere_ who seems obsessed with the ZZ plates – so definitely a thing in some subcultures.
Personally I struggle to fathom the mind of people who care what letters their license plate start with. I can understand that people feel the need to contribute extra tax money to the government in exchange for a custom license plate, and that’s just fine, but it’s the «some random two letters are better than others»-crowd I struggle with. Over time you’ll be sharing those letters with 89999 other people, it’s hardly unique.
Then there are some people who bought from a dealer who ran out of EV-plates.

My mom drives EV without E plate. Reason was that there were no E plate available where she registered it

The e-numbers are going fast. It might be a good idea to have a less recognizable letter combo for sale later on

Multiple reasons. When I bought my current EV I was told I could only get localized plates vs E related plates for it at that moment in time. So I have „SD“ on mine. Others have chosen to use non-E plates as they are not forced to do so. As pointed out „ZZ“ has been a popular pick. And personalized plates were made legal in 2021 on top of it, which quickly became popular with Tesla owners. One even managed to bag „A55MAN“ for his car.
But going by info online we have about a million free combinations of E plates left when you take out letter combinations they won’t use like EQ, EM, EØ etc.

You can choose between the regional and the EV number series when registering now. EV ones will be phased out as something special, I’m quite sure (most are electric now anyway, regional is a lot better)

It’s just some milk float owner in denial. He’s hoping someone, anyone, thinks he dug a lot deeper in his wallet and bought a Kodiaq.

I remember I started seeing Z plates around the time Bergen started on the SV plates, and I just figured a lot of people didn’t want to appear in support of the Socialist Left.

We localized our EV plate to my father’s hometown up north, even though we live about as far away as you can get. It hopefully makes others think we’re not familiar with the roads in southern Norway (highways, roundabouts, etc.) in case we make embarrassing mistakes.

The plates that confuses me the most are EZ plates. I’ve seen 3 and they have not been on electric cars.

I have personalized plates, not starting with E.
