To be clear, and to highlight what the Foreign Secretary has said: „moving closer to“ doesn’t mean the same thing as „rejoining“.
Although Labour won a landslide majority in the House of Commons, it did so with only a third of the popular vote, thanks to how the FPTP voting system works: the party benefitted from a split in the right-wing vote, with most of the swing going from the Conservatives to the hardline pro-Brexit populist Reform UK party. Labour will be very conscious of this: to survive the next election, they need to significantly improve living standards for the working and middle classes but not „betray the country“ by trying to undo Brexit.
