Rothenburg ob der Tauber

I think others have answered but my first instinct was Colmar or somewhere similar in Alsace. That whole region is worth checking out (despite being in France, not Germany 😉
Bamberg is also very nice, especially if you want to taste some excellent beer.
Don’t just stop at Rothenburg though. In my honest opinion too many people are clustering into that one town, it runs the risk over crowding and spoiling it for everyone.
What most photos don’t capture is that Rothenburg is not unique, it’s not alone, it’s not even my personal favourite.
Running south from Würzburg to Füßen is the romantic road, Rothenburg is the most famous, but you’ve got an entire treasure trove to explore. Many of the towns hardly anyone goes to. Not because they are worse but because the travel industry, guides, influencers, and vacationers keep going to the same two places out of convenience and because it gets clicks.
So follow the road and make your own way! You’ll be glad you did.
