Why do Russia and China have their embassies on the other side? Special honor?

North Korea operates diplomatic missions in 38 different countries (not including international organizations) but only 22 countries have diplomatic missions in North Korea.

Famously, Sweden is the protecting power for the United States in North Korea, though as with many „protecting power“ arrangements, their ability to do any sort of emergency consular or legal work for Americans in North Korea is pretty limited.

Edit: I said there are 22 missions in North Korea but this map only shows 21. That discrepancy is Belarus, which opened their embassy in Pyongyang just this month, though I couldn’t find many specifics.

Germany, Poland, Czechia and Romania all decided/were allowed to maintain their embassy/the embassy of the GDR after the fall of the iron courtain? Did Hungary or Bulgaria also have one in the past?

And anyone know why Nigeria maintains an embassy? Genuinely curious

Brazil has opened up the embassy on Pyongyang in 2009, as part of a larger movement to increase the diplomatic representation abroad.

As curiosity, the Brazilian embassy there has an underground shelter ready in case a war starts suddenly.

I wonder if North Korea would follow International law: running off from tourist group and into an embassy

We (Sweden) are one of few westerners the north koreans trust, but they refuse to pay their due for all the volvos they bought in the 70s lol.

    7. The German embassy in Pyongyang has been „temporarily“ closed for over 6 years now.

This map in interesting because it shows the different stages of Pyongyang’s reconstruction in 1950s and 60s after NATO bombings virtually obliterated the city from the face of the Earth. The right shore was the first one to get rebuilt during the period of limited recognition of the state – that’s why there are only 2 embassies here. When DPRK started establishing more and more relations, Pyongyang had its left shore reconstructed and a special district was built there.

    9. Sweden, UK, France and Germany also share the embassy building. Though France and NK don’t have diplomatic relations (it’s called French Bureau for Cooperation). And UK/Germany have had theirs closed since COVID

    10. Lol why tf is Romania right between Iran and Irak, further from the rest in like a semi-special spot? Did i get them right?! Anyway wtf lol
