So far I’ve visited Cologne, Dortmund, Essen, Oberhausen, Würzburg, Düsseldorf and Hannover. 🎄✨

Welche Weihnachtsmärkte in Deutschland sollte man außer diesen unbedingt besuchen!? 👀

Aachen. The location around the city hall and the cathedral is really nice but expect it to be crowded.
If you are looking for a smaller Christmas market, you may want to look at Christmas markets at castles like Burg Satzvey or Merode in the Eifel

Regensburg- Neupfarrplatz, Spital. (Schloss Thurn und Taxis is a really nice one, but you have to pay, and I have mixed feelings about Gloria and her family- as far as giving money to them)

I have been here for 4 almost 5 years now and no matter where I end up at:

Würzburg, Regensburg, Dresden, Amberg, etc like 20 or something other cities

My favorite will always be the Nürnberg one

    4. Thinking about Christmas market in August is gloomy. I am sad now thinking about winter 🫤

    5. Weimar – they have serveral locatios you can visit while strolling through the town.
And it is open after Christmas. So you can visit it whithout all the stress before Christmas.

Tübingen. Not their actual Weihnachtsmarkt, but Chocolart. It is a chocolate market, very popular

    7. My advice is to look for specialized markets in smaller locations. For example, near Saarbrücken I would recommend Sankt Wendel. It has a Medieval theme with unique food stands and hand-made crafts instead of the typical mass-produced things you find at many other markets.

In the Pfalz forest there is also a weekend market at Johanniskreuz. Unique because it is in the nature reserve!

Otherwise, combine the markets with cities you would like to visit anyway. Trier, Heidelberg, Cochem, Rothenburg obT, Salzburg (Austria), Strasbourg (France), etc.

Events at castles can also be beautiful, but I avoid any market with an entrance fee, so that’s limited how many of those I’ve tried!

Some lesser known but also nice ones are in the Harz region: Quedlinburg and Goslar

    9. Nürnberg is one of the most famous ones among tourists. It doesn’t have the most „local“ feeling due to how overcrowded and touristy it is, but the city itself is nice, and from there you can visit many beautiful smaller towns and cities with their own markets in the area.

For a more „local“ feeling, I would avoid the very big cities. Quedlinburg and Goslar are the two I’ve had good experiences with.

The one in Miltenberg, about 1 to 1.5 hours from Frankfurt, is lovely, quite large, and highly recommended.

Look for the ones in country estates, monasteries, museums, etc. They are often only open for a weekend or two during Advent season, but they are much more worth it, many local vendors, much more unique things to see, eat, drink and buy. Usually at least a part of the profits go to charities.

The big christmas markets have grown more similar over the years. Cities often issue licenses to operate markets, and there are some really large companies that then run many markets simultaneously. You can find certain products everywhere (like the colorful paper stars in the picture above, or certain candles, or ceramic houses or caterers who sell the same industrial „Glühwein“ etc.), so nothing is handmade or unique anymore. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course; it’s a business like any other, but it’s not „authentic“ in any way.

In northern Germany there are great markets at the „Kiekeberg Museum“ (an open air museum with old houses) or the annual arts and crafts markets at the „Koppel“ in Hamburg. Lübeck has the market in the „Heiligen-Geist-Hospital“.

But just google „Weihnachtsmarkt Kloster“ to find some more.

Monschau. Difficult to get to (not impossible) but one of the best ones in NRW.

Hamburg! They have multiple ones spread throughout the whole city. I loved the main one around the town hall, the Jungfernstieg one, and the Kiez one.
