start small, get your feet wet and see how it goes from there. I’m not into mugs but I would buy one of these or similar to these. believe in yourself and your abilities. best of luck.
moomin mugs are super popular and coffee mugs in general are popular here! most plates and bowls are ceramic in general!
Make them Moomin -mug sized

No handle on the cup makes the target audience a lot smaller in Finland imo.
If you can make them a bit bigger, so it turns into a smaller bowl instead of a mug, that has a bigger audience.
These Finns are extremely cheap.

Well, handmade with a price tag true to effort is too expensive to most.
Not as famous as buckets
We drink the most coffee per capita in the world so that in mind selling coffee mugs to Finns doesn’t sound like a bad business idea.
However we have some big, internationally acclaimed ceramic brands most Finns are rather devoted to and passionate about. On the other hand there’s always a small minority who will want something more unique and niche.
If ceramics is something you enjoy doing then this sounds like a nice side hustle or hobby. If you’re looking to make money this is an insanely saturated market with some massive established players you don’t stand a chance against.
It takes a lot of practice to make that level of pottery. It isn’t something you can create with just “a good eye and unique ideas”.
There are a few people who have commercialized their ceramic hobby. It really doesn’t matter that much how good an eye you have, other things are more important.
I’d buy those mugs!
The materials to make these glazes are very expensive, so if you’re fine with selling them at a high price and have an idea that there’s a market out there that will buy them, then it’s worth a shot.
I know there are some who have succeeded in making and selling ceramics, but it is hard. One in my city i know also teaches courses in ceramics, kind ceramics and wine type of nights.
I mean yeah, there’s *a* fairly sized market for ceramics.
though on, kinda specifically for brand name stuff.
for an example, I got a relatively extensive lomonosov tea set collection.
issue is, the moment its not a brand name its kinda inherently considered less valuable.
which kinda means you are capped at going at rates below their prices.
and your client-base is just those who don’t care its not branded and happen to be into that very particular idea you have had. (and find whatever price you’ve landed at acceptable)
and then you gotta wonder, how exactly are you supposed to get your product in front of those people specifically? selling at a flea market I’d argue has too limited of outreach and its costly where as I’m not really sure how effective tori or huuto net would be at getting it in front of people, since when looking for ceramics there people kinda usually search specifics.
I would claim that, compared to population size, yes, it’s very popular. Of course, the market itself is small compared to bigger places. We have a lot of highly respected ceramic artisans in the design industry. Most well-known by the masses are dead by now or semi-industrialized, though. I have to say, especially nowadays, we are very function-forward, and the art/artisan aspect is very much smaller compared to 30-80 years ago.
picture mugs are pretty mainstream stuff you can get pretty darn cheap. We generally appreciate functional and not-so-loud designs. The easiest „loud“ design, which is pretty popular, is most likely Arabia Valencia. I would suggest doing extensive research on what type of stuff past greats made and what design language was popular.
Just to give an idea of what I usually pay for ceramic (hand made, I don’t buy factory made) mugs and plates: ~15-45€, depending on the design. I’m very picky, and I’d buy the ones in your pic. Is it your design? You gonna sell them somewhere..? 👀
Another tip: check out medieval/iron age events, there’s demand for mugs etc! They need to be age appropriate designs, though, so that requires a bit of knowledge and interest.
Only if you want to do it as a hobby or a side hustle. Its very unlikely that you would be able to make a living in ceramics, as most people trained in it cant do it either. Its just a very oversaturated and industrialised market, people dont really have the money to be spending 50 euros on a handmade mug when they can get alright mugs at IKEA for like 3 euros
I’m by no means an expert. But I would say brightly colored ceramics like pictured are not to the liking of majority of finns. I think majority of Finns would prefer a more simple color scheme, something that doesnt look out-of-place in any kitchen.
Not sure about how sought after are hand made ceramics are. I’ve seen some places in Finland that try to sell hand-made goods, including ceramics, but usually the price is something that prevents them from getting sold in sustainable quantities.
I buy handmade ceramics in Finland but due to (understable) prices I only buy cup or two in a year. I don’t know anyone else in my circle who buys handmade cups or bowls etc.
Like for all custom made things, visual art and music included, the market in Finland is small simply because there aren’t many people in Finland. In the US for example there are so many people that even niche things can have a sustainable customer base or an audience. I feel that in Finland you need to be selling high end stuff, be a major brand, and/or get grants in order to make a living.
Have you been to these market that they all sell handcrafted handmade things? There are only few artists that stand out.
Do you do ceramics as a hobby or have you studied it?
Do you have any business understanding or knowledge how to run a business?
In what scale would you like to make them? With what technique?
Have you figured out how much the materials, firing etc costs would be? (+ safety !!especially if you make your own glazes!!)
I am not asking these to put you down, I am asking because you need to think about this too.. also happy to brainstorm/help if you are interested 🙂
In general starting a ceramic “brand” is hard. If you want to sell what you make as a hobby; just start posting them on social media etc and people will buy! 🤗
