Does it have anything to do with also adopting our high cost of living?
It’s more an economic than cultural decision so no surprise.
Hmmm almost as if we live in a sociaity that is unaffordable for anyone to have kids. Just a thought 🤔

I personally really want kids. But, we are barely supporting ourselves, let alone a child.
I can’t afford to own a home, how can I afford to also have 2.1 children?
Time to get the parents and grandparents abroad to put more pressure on the kids to have babies!

So, y’all thought, that someone from a country where they traditionally have more children because it’s cheap and you have your entire family support network, will do the same in their new country with zero family support and a cost of $1M/child to raise them to the age of 22?!?!?!?

This is such a talking point of the moment by the right and the billionaire class that demands endless wage slaves and consumers.
There has NEVER been more humans on earth than this very second, and the planet adds 200k net new people per 24hr period – 1.4M per week.
The population is NOT „collapsing“, it is still increasing, just increasing at a slightly lower rate than recent decades.
None of my friends who are in their 30s have kids.
The reason why people don’t have children, it’s not the money it’s because of the time commitment. As a society we put so much pressure on parents, but we don’t offer very much help.
Studies showing people are most unhappy when they’re raising children and their 30s and 40s and they become happy again in their 50s and 60s when the children are moved out. If someone could figure that issue out, you might change the fertility rate.
Raising children consumes a significant amount of productivity. In almost all cases there is no return on investment for the people who have to raise those children. Rather, it is the future employers of the adults those childern become that get the benefit of the investment.
Its just economically irresponsible to commit to a three to four hundred thousand dollar investment when it has no RoI.
If you act like people are units of labour or like the whole point of life is to pursue return on investment then this is where it leads.
If they wanted us to have kids, they would pay us to do it. That’s how this system works.

Can’t have kids when it costs more than a million bucks to buy a small townhouse. If the government really wants to help, it should start building 3 bedroom apartments. We have an oversupply of 1 bedroom or studio „luxury“ condos, and the government should not be bailing these developers out. Hard to start a family in a 1 bedroom condo.

Once they get here and see how expensive it is to live they have no choice but to adopt the low birth rate.
We are being taxed into extinction.
Many people can’t afford kids and though I’d say that’s the government’s fault, this is in fact the government’s plan.
China heavily subsidies food for its people especially school children
We strangled the young generation and it didn’t work, let’s see how strangling the immigrants works out.
We’ve hit our societal population cap.. the next cap will be decided by the planet itself.. keep pumping the numbers by bringing people in will only compound the issue and mane the inevitable consequences come faster.
We need to accept we were never meant to increase populations forever.. the only reason we’re doing it is to feed a capitalist machine.
It’s hard to bring kids into an economy that will demand 20x+ wages for a house.
It’s almost as if a high cost of living, long commutes and limited daycare availability make people less likely to have more kids….
As an easily-changed example, RTO is not a family friendly policy. It makes parents‘ lives harder and more expensive and makes everyone’s commutes longer and shittier.
Thought this was already fairly established? Children of immigrants will basically acclimate to a lot of the norms of wherever their parents immigrated to. As others point out, it’s too expensive to have a lot of kids right now. Low-wage providers love importing people that will have children, but that „benefit“ goes away after a generation.
