      True actually! They were bought alive to keep em fresh till christmas eve on 24.12.

      Not that much anymore, but it definitely was a thing 20-30, years ago. I have some foggy memories that my parents keept karp in bathub few days before christmas.

      100% true, it was done so they can be freshly killed just before making a christmas meal

      We had it only once. No one wanted to kill it, so he stayed in the tub for long (washing was difficult). Until I, a 5 year old, killed him by overfeeding. Poor thing.

      True. 80’s communist poland was an interesting time.

      Catholics don’t eat meat on Christmas (yes, this sucks). But they do eat fish. This was a way to get fresh fish, but you had to keep it in the bathtub to basically let it filter out the mud taste, since they’re bottom feeders.

      Had it at my grandparents Christmas dinner a few times. And it was always fun for us kids to see the fish in the bathtub.

      Yes, it was a thing that used to happen before Christmas in many households, not so much anymore though.

      When I was a child this was a thing at my extended family’s houses. But we never really did it cuz lack of money. Thing is yeah, it is, or alreast was, a real tradition. Where else do you think all them dishes with fish come from? /silly

      Yes. My grandmother asked me to kill them to man up when I was a kid.

      I am born in Poland in 1978 and I confirm, this is true. My younger brother was told that the fishes had escaped, before the Christmas dinner was served.

      I’m 17 and had this experience once in my life, I cried because „my family killed a new pet“ I was like 4 my mom used to tell me this story every Christmas 😭🙏🏻

      Yup, core childhood memory.

      Then when I became an adult it was the sending off and processing carp memory.

      It’s a manufactured tradition.

      Back when Poland was still a communist republic, the government was struggling with pretty much everything. Roman Catholics traditionally don’t eat meat for Christmas, but fish is permitted, so every family in the country needed fresh fish for the same date once every year. To hide the fact that the country had no means of refrigerating so much fish, a campaign teaching people than it’s best when bought live was launched and it stuck with the older generation, so they would still do it in the 90s and 2000s. I remember huge tanks of live fish at supermarkets in the early 2000s, but they got phased out since then. It’s not illegal to still do it (buy live, keep in bathtup, prepare yourself), but one would have to go out of their way to make it happen.

      Most people had a bathtub, so that’s where they kept the live fish by default.

      This is legit. I remember, that I had to wait for carp to be prepared before I could use the bathtub.

      Yeah. When I was a kid in the 90s I would get the honor to drain the water so the could suffocate in peace instead of being clubbed in the head by my dad. Now come to think of it, it was torture.

      Was a thing in my house until grandpa passed away. Other family members didn’t want to kill the fish themselves, so we started buying dead one

      ‚Tradition‘ is big word, you just want your Fish fresh. It’s communism thing were not everyone had a fridge. It kinda stuck i guess

      in the 80’s, it was an actual nessecary part of holiday. because of product shorages, people thought it would better to keep fish instead of waiting however many months for meat for christmas.

      Back in 90s it was a thing, but not tradition.
      Shops would sell fresh and alive carps, and most people would more likely get those and put in bathtubs because there wouldn’t be much space in the fridge (due all the preparations for Christmas)
      I remember even how my dad showed me how to then kill and prepare carp for Christmas Eve.

      it wasn’t a thing in my house, but yeah, it’s a thing. i don’t think it happens that much anymore, at least not as much as it used to, but every single year around christmas pics start popping up

      It was happening for real. The reason was to have a freshly killed fish on Christmas Eve. It was a traditional Christmas dish.
