The Grammys are increasingly becoming a joke (well, tbf, it has been for a while) and I’m glad BTS are taking a stand when critics were saying this was the BTS’ best shot.
honestly so proud and brave of them. it’s genuinely disgusting of the grammys to keep segregating and boxing music from different languages (latin, kpop etc) away so they don’t compete from the „main“ categories. proud of bts for standing their ground and standing up for what they believe in cause they would have been a shoe in to be nominated and probably win the new kpop grammy to be honest.
So they looked at the bullshit award that the Grammys were trying to carve out to sideline them and said they’re not interested. Good.
Sometimes I do wonder how much artist really dislike certain institutions, and than you get confirmation like this that they can’t stand them.
A bit of a shame as Arirang is such a good body of work.
They have the biggest chance to secure an award, but they chose to call Grammys out for being racist by segregating artists according to their language and region.

I love them so much. 😭😭 They saw the writing on the wall, this category being introduced right when they returned. It was practically engraved with their name, anything they submitted within the rules would have won and the Grammys would have been happy to shut them out of everything else while throwing their names everywhere just for the social media engagement.

This is such a huge deal not only for BTS but for everyone who worked on the album. The producers have all been giving interviews hyping the album and BTS up. They had some big names as producers and composers. Arirang was getting a lot of traction on Grammy predictions, too.
But I’m so proud of them for making a stand rather than accept more of the othering that the Western media and awards shows keep on giving them.
A part of me hopes other artists will join BTS in solidarity because this move from the Grammys affects all Asian artists, not just BTS.

I hope all other Korean acts follow suit. It’s unacceptable that the Grammys have been segregating minorities from the main categories. In fact, I hope the rest of the industry follows suit for all the other segregated categories.

Whether people like Arirang or not, the album definitely had a shot at multiple nominations. The Grammy’s were trying to shove them in a box with a bow and a consolation prize, so well done BTS! You have my utmost respect for putting the music ahead of the joke that the Grammy’s have become. Well done!
biggest power move ever. im so happy they’ve come to terms (probably for a while now) that they don’t need someone else‘ approval for just making and creating music. i remember the days when they said winning a grammy was their #1 goal. i always hated the fact that in the past years they’d let them perform and make it seem like they’d win- but they never did, just to keep their viewership up

Honestly, I respect it. Whatever subjective opinions I or others may have about their music, their colossal impact is undeniable, and have been for a long, long time. For all metrics of objective success, impact, and recognition, I’d even say they’re a true industry giant, bigger than a lot of the biggest artists in the world. In fact, iirc, the last Grammy they attended, the show was riding on them, not the other way around, while doing a disservice to their success.
Kpop artists are treated like such crap by the west. Racist jokes, pacifying awards, and constantly moving the goal post. I get why kpop groups want the accolades of the western artists as a way to prove that they are that good especially when even k entertainment looks down on them. I hope this can be the start of a shift to against companies feeding their idols to the wolves for just a smidge of the respect they deserve. There is no award that can change the history already made. Whether it’s bts or any other kpop group they don’t need that shit.
This is exactly what BTS 2.0 is to me. They’re not gonna take any more of this bullshit and rightfully so!

They saw the way „Latin“ music was pushed into a corner and know the very same thing is going to happen to kpop and by extension them with this category. The entire concept of it is built on racism and the idea that minority artists from other countries (or Puerto Rico which we treat like another country) don’t have a place in the main categories, no matter how successful their music is in the United States. Kudos to BTS for taking this stand. Truly proud of them for it.

Not personally an Army, nor do I keep up with BTS that much, but this is a good statement to make. The way the Grammys introduces these like, alternative categories to the main ones has never sat right with me. It feels like an appeasement rather than a recognition.

Good on them! I never understood the positive reactions kpop fans had for this because it just screamed exclusionary for me but perhaps I just understood it wrong? The Grammys are an American institution first and foremost, so I was also under the assumption that only Asian acts that have a solid presence in the west would be considered, like how there’s thousands of African artists with hit songs all over the continent, but you really only see acts like Tyla and Burna Boy being mainstays in the African category (that I’ll say to this day was only created to exclude Tyla!) since they do very well in the US. It was a bit baffling seeing the groups and idols people wanted to see nominated lol like I’d firmly believe more Indian artists would be nominated than kpop acts with the numbers the South Asian diaspora gives Bollywood songs. And that kind of lies the problem because if BTS or Rosé or hell even Psy couldn’t win with actual viral songs and staggering numbers, in my opinion, a category like this would exclude even more artists and could actually encourage *more* pandering to the west in order to boost sales and streams in America.
It’s very ballsy too because isn’t this their most commercially and critically acclaimed album yet? I know some people don’t like to hear it, but I felt Arirang and BTS dominated pop culture discourse, positive and negative, way more than most other big artist release this year; Harry Styles and Drake’s albums in particular seemed to have just come and went.
If you know their history- they have been consistently submitting their music since 2018, and have preformed, attended, and done all that an artist can do to be considered for a Grammy win. They have wanted this for nearly a decade. It is so incredibly bold of them to choose to not submit their music on the year the win was pretty much guaranteed to be theirs with this new category. Goes to show how frustrating this is for them.

I think this is going to have a bigger impact than we think.
This is going to actually create more discussion around the award segregation issue than if BTS had just gotten the throw-away Asian Pop award, or even been nominated and lost in any of the main categories. They’ve brought attention to it and that is going to upset some suits.
And with the group not showing up to the show, the viewership won’t get that ARMY bump, which is going to be brutal for an awards show that’s already been losing relevancy for years.
Hybe just announced that it’s not a company wide boycott. It’s at the artist’s discretion. Would be fun to see who joins/ does not join them

The asian categories being introduced was such a blatant way to make sure BTS would never be nominated in the pop categories ever again and I love that they’re saying no to the BS. If they can’t compete like they should with their peers bcs of language then they*d rather not give Grammys the clout. Bravo
I have to respect it even though the whole situation pisses me off. The recording academy pulled a dirty ass move, and this was the best way they could respond
honestly, this is such a relief. since the moment they were invited to present an award back in 2019 i had an awful feeling the grammys would milk them for everything BUT their worth as artists in the industry after that and boy was i correct.
the committee has never taken bts seriously, they only ever wanted the attention and ratings armys brought to the physical show. the new asian pop(?) category was made solely to shoebox bts into an award separate from the main artists they deem actually worthy and i am SO glad they’re aware of how embarrassing it is and therefore aren’t letting themselves be walked over anymore.
still, they could always submit next year or the year after that with whatever comes next. but i think it’s beautiful that arirang, an album with so much weight and importance to bts as not only koreans but a family reuniting after so long, is treasured by them to the point they’d rather protect it from that bullshit corporation than let it be torn to shreds by a board of mostly old white people that don’t care to understand it’s importance.
i don’t doubt that they’ll be mocked for this, and if another kpop artist *does* win a grammy before bts then they’ll never hear the end of it, but clearly the boys don’t care so why should armys? i welcome this stand they’re making with big wide open arms lol
edit: i’m still thinking about this, and above all i think it’s just really fucking sad to have watched bts be genuinely excited about the idea of winning a grammy, for *years* yoongi and the others had said countless times it was the biggest achievement they’d ever want to claim, only for the institution to treat them like a joke or a fad that would fade away, ultimately making that new category in a “here damn, just shut up asking” way must’ve crushed all the decade long hope for them. i’m happy that they know they’re above it now, but it still must hurt. you don’t get over something like this overnight.
Sort of a bittersweet decision for me because I know there’s a lot of bad faith people who will twist this.
But I think seeing BTS stand up for their self respect is inspiring. It doesn’t have to be the big man Grammys but I hope other kpop groups and artists also feel inspired to say no to racial tokenization

Im incredibly proud of them for this decision. They named the Grammys in several interviews in the past. It was a dream for some of them at least. So they gave up that dream for now. As Yoongi once said “I don’t know what circumstances you were in, but I think you must have had tremendous courage. Giving something up decisively takes lots of courage. And, you’ve worked hard.”
the people who were convinced they’re chasing western validation and a grammy with arirang are in absolute shambles trying to find a new narrative today.

BTS, do not need the Grammy’s, they are global super stars already. A lot artists who have won a Grsmmy, are not as successful as BTS.

That’s an amazing position they’re taking here for all asian artists, especially because you liking BTS or not it’s unquestionable that grammy did this shit because BTS had a big chance of competing with the biggest western artists (both this year and in the future years), maybe they wouldn’t win ok, but we know why the grammy did this separate category stupid thing and how they have already done things like this before in discrimination to latino artists and black artists too.
Just a little sad because it would be even more powerful if other big asian acts took the same position too, but probably most of them will try to win it any way. In some sense i can understand it, but well… in BTS’s case the group and the fans don’t need it to prove their impact, success, etc. Grammy doing this shit move itself already proved the power BTS has. lol
