Not surprising. They have been warning about super bugs for decades.

I know many people that take unprescribed antibiotics for viral infections….

Two problems:
1. We get the government we vote for. Doctors have overprescribed antibiotics for years (I believe this is getting better now), climate change is accelerating the spread of drug-resistant infections, and industrial farming practices are cruel, environmentally destructive, and helping make the problem worse.
2. Everyone now thinks they went to medical school. From COVID onward, people decide they know more than doctors, researchers, and the broader scientific consensus. I have witnessed people with conditions from cancer to schizophrenia repeating a nonsensical desire to heal „naturally“ and blaming the medicine for their condition. They have a widespread sentiment that there is a conspiracy in the medical community.

Health agencies note that about 70% to 73% of all global antibiotics are used in farm animals.
The CDC estimates that roughly 20% (or 1 in 5) of resistant infections in humans come from food and animals
