The Shopify guys, and notably the CEO/founder, have constantly shown themselves to be really shitty and entitled people. The President also loves to cry antisemitism at every turn but wasn’t quick to act on Nazi-related items being sold on Shopify storefronts.
The company itself is a huge Canadian success story, but it could use an overhaul at the top. Carney was actually offered the President position back in 2020 but declined. That would’ve been a nice change at the time.
Here’s an alternative plan: once you lock in your millionaire or billionaire status, you should lose your right to vote. Reasoning: you can pay for whatever your heart desires so you shouldn’t care what the government does.
Toby and the other tech ceos are getting so scared that people are fed up with their delusional narcissism, they actually think they deserve more than one political vote?
They couldn’t come right out and say they consider us 1/3 of a citizen so they decided it sounds better to say they’re 5 times the useful human you are.
These people aren’t special – they’re just rich and selfish.
The context is a story about largely pensioner NIMBYs who get up and oppose any housing that doesn’t match their 1950s suburban utopia. And the context is San Francisco not Canada.
He has a point but it’s more of a shower thought than a legitimate proposal.
Tech bros are insane and should be treated as such.
Their success in business by embracing technology convinces them they are geniuses and breeds an enormous sense of entitlement and superiority, so they start believing they know better than everyone else about politics, economics, society, etc.
The results are their promotion of unhinged ideas that just happen to concentrate power in the hands of people like themselves while everyone else is expected to live like serfs.
I think incredibly funny that these rich weirdos have enough money to influence laws in very dubiously legal ways but are just unable to shut the fuck up and let their lobbying arms do the work.
Every single time one of these weirdos opens their mouth and just says the most odious, mind numbingly stupid thing possible a PR flack is going „oh fuck, not again“

ANYONE can run for Finance Minister BUT the contestants have to release their PROPOSED expenditure platform and aren’t allowed to deviate from that by a magnitude of say, 10-15%.
Same for immigration Minister, and then the PRIME Minister.

Like most Tech Bros he’s successfully identified a problem (in this case Senior NIMBY’s ruining housing for a generation) but offers just the absolute worst solutions.
Taking away someone’s ability to vote is asinine, even if that vote is destroying our future, because it starts an extremely slippery slope that ends with the death of democracy. Also giving somebody more than one vote for any reason is so laughable I won’t even dignify it with an answer.
There’s other ways we need to fight NIMBYism, but this ain’t it.
He’s not wrong. High earners pay the majority of taxes in Canada. Why shouldn’t they have more voting influence than people who have no skin in the game?
It doesn’t make the idea less dumb, but the title says $500k earners, but the text says ‘those who pay X amount of income tax’.
Just because someone is wealthy it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re intelligent. A lot of people get their bag through inheritance, lottery winnings, or screwing someone over. And wealthy CEOs dont know *why* someone isn’t, because they’re insulated from that world.
I **do** agree that too much of our politics (especially at the local level, who else has time to attend town meetings) is controlled by pensioners who say no to everything. Don’t like the idea of restricting their vote, but something does have to be done. Far too many are also out of touch from what working people need.

Because the first thing they’d do would be elect someone who would exempt the rich from paying taxes, yet still keep their votes.
When talking about further taxing of billionaires, some people are quick to point out the relatively limited amount of government revenue it would functionally produce, completely ignoring the main benefit: *reduced wealth & power for people like this*
