**Scientists rank the disorders that age the brain the fastest**
Some brain disorders seem to age the brain far faster than others. Alzheimer’s disease tops the list in a new study.
But the biggest surprise comes next. Alcohol and tobacco dependence rank ahead of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression.

Using nearly 49,000 MRI scans, researchers estimated how “old” each person’s brain appeared compared to their actual age.
The results reveal a striking hierarchy, with addiction leaving structural changes on par with some of the most serious psychiatric illnesses. By contrast, ADHD and autism showed no signs of accelerated brain aging.

I’m still convinced Alzheimer’s is aged undiagnosed and untreated ADHD. Imagine ADHD in a degraded brain. I wouldn’t be surprised if future treatments for Alzheimer’s is stimulants and non stimulant medications.
Now how about the comorbidity of all these disorders with each other? I dont wanna do the math on the number of combinations but I know alcoholism can be informed by adhd.
As someone just diagnosed with ADHD and being assessed for autism, this is incredibly welcome news. As someone who drinks too much: not so much.
okay but what about the publications suggesting ADHD/aut -> more chances of Alzheimer’s? How do these things relate?
Still, glad to read my forgetful difficult brain is just like that, not 2x aged.
Another good reminder to avoid the vices of alcohol and tobacco
Finally a win for us AuDHD.
Is it tobacco use, specifically? Or just nicotine addiction in general?
And here come the alcohol apologists!
