Benjamin Netanyahu accused Zohran Mamdani of “fomenting hate” after the New York mayor threatened to arrest the Israeli prime minister.
Mr Mamdani pledged to honour an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Mr Netanyahu for alleged war crimes in Gaza if he stepped foot in New York.
However Mr Netanyahu said he was “not concerned” about the threats, accusing Mamdani of “fomenting hate”.
Mr Mamdani later backed down, acknowledging that he did not have the authority to execute the warrant as the US is not a signatory to the ICC.
The Israeli leader said he still planned to visit the UN General Assembly in New York City in autumn despite the threats.

Mamdani plays these gesture politics because his base loves it. Democrats despite the damage it does to them in the long run, like it because it annoys Trump.

Netanyahu cannot be arrested in NY by Mamdani as he’s a mayor. He doesn’t control US law nor can ask the police to arrest people he doesn’t like personally. You need to have an arrest warrant which he doesn’t have. I’m not sure why New Yorkers accept such talk from him. It won’t hurt Netanyahu yet makes the mayor seem egomaniacal.
US is not a member of ICC so any arrest warrant is totally irrelevant to US. Meanwhile the prosecutor who created the ICC arrest warrant was supposed to be in NY a week ago when a vote about his job was held there. He couldn’t be there as he is banned from USA. And they voted to fire him as the sexual abuse case was too believable.
If Mamdani really had the power he proposes he has he would have made it possible for the ICC prosecutor to travel to NY for his own trial.
The London mayor is also Muslim and also said simililar things about Netanyahu. But at least they are members of ICC so it’s not total bunk.
The horse has left the barn on this topic. Netanyahu needs to look in the mirror to see who’s responsible for inciting hate. He is single handedly doing that.
He is responsible for the growing global perception that Israel has undergone a profound and historic deterioration, shifting from initial expressions of solidarity following the October 2023 attacks to widespread international condemnation and legal scrutiny.
He is the one constantly conflating the Jewish faith, Zionism, Israel, and his criminal policies.
The sooner he is delivered to the ICC the better.

When I demand that criminals are held to account for their crimes, is that also inciting hate? Is it no longer permissible to say, „This person is clearly guilty of a crime and should face justice“? What’s the difference between that and what Mamdani is doing?
