First rule of Facism make the press afraid to print the truth
The free speech absolutionist right wing at it again.
Article says woman journalists face the biggest risks: “Female journalists faced the brunt of abuse, describing gendered and sexualised harassment, explicit threats, inappropriate messages and online comments focused on appearance.”
So I guess the “our wimmin and children” crowd will be here any moment now to condemn this. Right? Right?
Journalists used to take real risks to reveal the truth. I mean I can’t blame them for not wanting to, not many people do, but it used to be understood that journalism was a profession for the people that would do that.
The right wing are putting fear into people who want to publish truthful and accurate media? Shocking but potentially could have a domino effect
I can very much believe the testimony of those that are women and even the lot that are afraid of reporting on the far right, but can we be for real here? Our journalists are not afraid of criticising Trump and the US out of anything other than their own ideological stance.
One of the very first decisions our new PM made was to continue the policy of his predecessor in allowing the US to bomb Iran in an illegal neo-colonial assault from UK bases; a position completely and severely out of touch with public opinion (58% opposed, 26% in favour, even 39% strongly opposed; according for YouGov).
What did our media have to say about it? Essentially fuck all. Because they don’t actually care about this as an issue and, like every other foreign policy issue, the stance of US exceptionalism and support is their default.
That’s an ideological stance, not one made out of fear for anything other than the fact that highlighting the blatant hypocrisy of our new ‚man of the people PM‘ would threaten the status of the US alliance.
Trumps creeping international facsism is enabled by this exact apathy, as are all of his other overreaches when the media is very happy to pretend the US is not only a normal country, but one we should pay respect and deference to; especially on foreign policy.
Journalists do face issues in challenging issues in our society but pretending that the UK press—culturally dominated by the legacy print media, 90% owned by US obsessed billionaire backed trusts—is anything other than *ideologically* compromised when it comes to the US, betrays the source and extent of the issue here.
Pressures on reporting about US related issues come far more from the owners of media corporations in this country than they do from the public; which actually rather dislikes the US and its president. The small number of the public that are ferally pro-US (mostly older people, who aren’t on the streets) is not enough to intimidate into existence such a US exceptionalist culture into our media sphere.
The other issues are far more valid, I just wanted to highlight that this one is just a serious and has a different source. The blanket *self* censorship is just as dangerous as the more forceful censorship when it comes to the state of public discourse.
So they’ve wrote an article about the far right telling us that they’re afraid to talk about the far right. But in their list of things they’re scared to talk about they haven’t listed the one thing that would actually get them attacked and potentially killed for talking about.
So tell me who are they really afraid of. The boogeyman they talk about in the article or the real monster they fear to mention.

Televised and radio media have been doing this for months, with people like David Blevins (Sky News) and Anushka Asthana (Channel Four News) grinning, simpering and sane-washing about what “that whacky President” has been up to THIS week.
This might be caused more by fears of affecting programme deals than safety fears…
The ONE notable exception has been LBCs Simon Marks, whose ‘American Week’ on Friday afternoons has been telling it like it is since the beginning of the year.
I’m sorry, but it’s extremely funny they’ve thrown “trans issues” in the text, without any actual examples of self-censorship surrounding “trans issues”. If there’s one thing the British press haven’t shut the fuck up about in the last decade, it’s their hatred for trans people.
