Skilled workers should mean skilled workers.
Not „cashiers“ or „shelf stockers“.
Raise the salary amount and classify skilled workers correctly, so we let actual professionals into this country.
I do think the ’skilled visa‘ thing does need to change personally. I feel like the role should be for actually skilled high paying jobs, not for things like cashier roles or other jobs.
The skilled visa system has been turned into an absolute farce and everyone knows it. The amount of barbers, vape shops and takeaways that are totally dead, yet somehow manage to sponsor a plethora of „skilled workers“ is appalling.
There is a needless conflation here.
Yes, some of the books sold in the highlighted shops sound grossly offensive. But as the article itself states, they can all be legally sold in the UK.
No, the skilled worker route should not be accessible to businesses employing workers who do not fit the criteria / definition of „skilled“. If the definition of skilled is inadequate, then it needs to be reviewed. This is the fault of the administrators of the scheme, not Muslim bookshops.
But £38ishk to work in a book shop (if inrecall the salary threshold correctly)? Bet there are loads of people currently domiciled here who would jump at that (and no, I am not anti-immigration in principle nor do I hate Muslims or Jews or anyone really – except for my neighbours who habitually flytip, I *do absolutely* hate them :)).
Interesting that Craig Simpson is focusing so much on the content of the books being sold by these book shops, as though that’s supposed to provoke outrage. I’ve repeatedly seen people say on reddit that this system isn’t being abused.
I was trying to find a thread about a Starbucks opening and one of the stipulations was that they had to hire local workers but ended up employing people on skilled workers visa, the majorities of the reply’s where that it wasn’t happening.

Alarmist article with a title vague enough to throw labour under the bus. But the statistics and immigrants under question are since 2021, when the threshold was almost half what it is now.
