    1. All the missing ones must be due to where is the boundary between city and town.

    2. The Romans were relentless city-builders, and wherever the legions settled a town often followed. A striking number of Europe’s capitals began this way. London started life as Londinium, Paris as Lutetia, Vienna as Vindobona and Cologne as Colonia. This map plots every foundation outside Italy itself, from the damp frontier forts of northern Britain down through Gaul and Iberia to the edges of the Balkans and North Africa.

Fun fact: English towns ending in -chester, -caster or -cester, such as Manchester, Lancaster and Gloucester, all take their name from castra, the Latin word for a military camp.

Adding rivers to it would show things even more clearly (for example the Rhine)

Constantinople was founded by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great in 324 CE on the site of an older city named Byzantium. He rebuilt the location to serve as the new capital of the Roman Empire.

Most of the data points in this map are within Italy. Downvoting for misleading title

    8. Roman Soldier: Sir, there is an Germanic area we ca……

General: is it on the Rhine?

      Soldier: uh no…

      General: keep moving!

    9. It makes no sense; there should be many more outside of Italy and many fewer inside

Missing out a city in south west France where my aunt and grandma lives, called Dax. Built by the Romans for the thermal baths that existed there. The city was founded around a hot spring called La Néhe.

Surprised they never founded anything in Corsica. Was it already completely populated by the time the Roman’s arrived?

    12. Romans founded a lot of cities in current day Bulgaria, for example, there is none of your map. Are you ok?
