    1. Parental wealth may be more important than whether they smoke or drink for a child’s future health

UK and Norwegian scientists say a family’s socioeconomic status may be more important than parental behaviours such as smoking, drinking or caffeine consumption when it comes to children’s future health. The team analysed data from more than 230,000 parents and children in the UK and Norway, including info on parental health behaviours, including smoking, drinking, and caffeine consumption, as well as their socioeconomic status. They then linked these variables with 72 different child health outcomes at six timepoints, including size at delivery, weight, hyperactivity, social communication, aggression, and depressive symptoms. They found mum’s behaviours did not have a bigger effect on child health outcomes than dad’s, and that socioeconomic status had the biggest effect overall – 15% of the child health effects were linked with family affluence. That compares with 6% for smoking, 3% for alcohol, and 0.4% for caffeine. The findings suggest efforts to improve child health might be more effective if they tackle inequalities rather than individual parent behaviour, the authors conclude.

    2. This is not new information for anyone who has been poor. Going to the doctor never happened. Going to the dentist, never. Get your eyes checked…. Nope. Parents were always working so they didn’t have the time and they couldn’t afford it anyway. Medication, who can afford it. Eat a clove of garlic if you’re getting sick or if you have toothache put aspirin on it to try and kill the root.

Plus you got to stay in school so you can get an education so that you can take care care of your parents when they’re elderly. Work hard kids.

Single payer healthcare can save lives.
