Disgraceful. Mark Carney is vetoing a major public infrastructure expansion project to protect one third of one park.
Mark Carney was just a bold-faced liar when he promised to build megaprojects on schedules faster than ever seen before. He is caving before a crowd of NIMBYs and the members of the Royal Yacht Club.
The idea was that Porter and likely Air Canada would be operating quieter aircraft than the Q400s, to much farther destinations from a centralized airport.
But I guess that’s not what Torontonians want, right? Keep commuting to Pearson?

Wow. The public comment period just closed today… they couldn’t even wait for the result summary. Urban NIMBYs win again.
Good, there is a perfectly good international airport a bus ride away at Pearson that just got a $3 billion funding package to increase the annual passenger amount by a whopping 50%. The overwhelming majority of the city don’t want it, we don’t need it. The money can be used elsewhere.
Simple solution. Giant aircraft carrier. It would be handy for Downtown Toronto folks to have access to more short haul flights.
I wish the rest of Ontario would step up to obliterate the need for Pearson.
What was the opposition to this?

Modern jets are quieter than the planes they fly there now.
The idea that NIMBYism is anywhere similar for like housing, and an airport is wild.
Like guys, I hate NIMBYs too. But people should get to have a say over whether an airport is expanded near them. I would say the same about an industrial plant.
The problem with NIMBYs is they exclude people. But people get to have a say on some things. Democracy is still somewhat real.
How could this happen? The NDP supporters assured me that Carney was fully behind this project and that he hated downtown Toronto.
At least this should temper some of the more hysteric claims from those types about how „right wing“ Carney is.
The first thing that I thought, I’m interested to see what ford has to say about this.
But my opinion, considering that it would’ve infringed on public spaces, the minister mentioned little Norway Park, and Hanlans point Beach. I think it’s right for Ottawa to reject what Ford wanted. Even with higher noise, never made sense to me.
But I will mention, this federal government had the same thought process, that the early Trudeau government did, they also rejected expanding the island.
Good. IMO close the airport and expand the Island park, or build a new neighbourhood. I travel to and through Toronto all the time and Pearson is fine. It makes very little sense once HSR is running
I wonder if now that the decision has been made, the LPC MP’s from Toronto will suddenly say they were actually opposed to the expansion the entire time, and just never bothered to say much publicly.
The criticism in this thread of the perceived NIMBYism is woefully misinformed. We’re not necessarily opposed just to the expansion of the runway – it’s that the proposal envisioned a 500% increase in passengers.

The airport and the surrounding infrastructure is in no way equipped to handle that quintupling of passenger volume. A proper assessment would have found the existing facilities woefully inadequate. Realistically, it would have required dramatic expansion of the airport terminal, the entryway, supporting facilities, car park, transit, highway connectivity… It would have entirely destroyed the western half of Toronto’s waterfront and surrounding communities. All to expand an airport that serves, at best, as a slightly more convenient alternative to the already easily-accessible Pearson airport.
No, this was a bone headed proposal, and I’m glad Torontonians overwhelmingly voiced their opposition and the federal government was smart enough to shut this down.
Carney says lots of things that sound right.
Billy Bishop expansion will probably happen, it will be timed in such a way that by the time Jets show up, he’ll be long gone.
Air Canada is based in Montreal, keeping montreal happy is better than appeasing Spadina-Harbour Front (Toronto island riding) that has been pretty much a Liberal Strong hold.
