Honestly, do we really need to open another discussion regarding Trump changing the deal (as it were.)
At this point in the process we should all be used to the idea that -any- deal with the US isn’t worth the paper it’s written on (as long as that Tyrant is there) or that changing the terms is some bizarre form of a negotiating tactic.
Just carry on and ignore this bluster. It’s a big smoke show.
Trump can’t really kill a state agreement, just sign a superseding agreement (which is what he did)
If a future president decided to withdraw from the new deal, the original Michigan deal would immediately become the legal document governing the bridge
There are 2 deals – one with Michigan which remains unchanged. No tolls will be split 50/50 until the bridge is paid off.
Trump added a side deal of getting 50/50 of net revenues after operating costs for 15 years. The money will go to the federal government, not the state of Michigan.
Under these terms, Michigan is getting screwed the most because they will have to wait even longer for the bridge to be paid off.
I guarantee you if you sat down Trump in a room and pressed him on details, he’d know absolutely nothing about the old deal or the new deal. Just „the old deal was very unfair, Canada treats us very badly“ blah blah. Why do we even report on what he thinks as if it’s meaningful? The emperor has no clothes
„Trump says“ is like the opposite of „Simon says“.
Do NOT follow his lead. Why? Because he doesn’t even understand what he’s saying, and will probably change his mind later on.
Remember when he said that the USMCA was the best trade deal ever, a trade deal that his own team negotiated?
