Silence from all the millionaires who recently “waned to give away more money to the hmrc to help fellow citizens”

    2. ChickenPijja on

Nothing at all because they don’t actually want to pay more tax, and that they actually just want good pr by claiming they want to pay more tax

    3. Crazy_Pineapple3704 on

All of those ‘patriotic millionaires’ are suspiciously silent about this.

    4. Horror-Protection225 on

That’s fine but there still a load of insanely rich people who don’t want to pay tax over really obscure financial area geo that is PAYE plebs couldn’t even dream up let alone access and we’d really like the playing field levelled….

    5. Fabulous-Wrap9367 on

Why is this so hard for people to understand though? I’d personally pay more tax, but only if we all did, as otherwise I’d just be a bit poorer and there’d be no marked improvement on public services. It’s just the same argument but scaled up

But they HAVE to make a song and dance about it. Make it a big issue they are dusting the wets of us poors while they get their accountant to send more cash to their offshore bank accounts and claim this was a „charity donation“ while at the same time never spending actual money in the country what so ever.

    7. Darkgreenbirdofprey on

Fuck off HMRC this is about the ultra rich actually paying their fair share.

Cunts at the office are all too happy to send the baliffs after the PAYE pigs.

    8. No-Tone-6853 on

What’s the point in it being optional, it needs to be systemic to have any actual value.

    9. Itsstillyourturn on

Or most of them (if not all) incl Gary Lineker could just simply do a tax return every year and pay the same as PAYE workers. No ones being forced to take dividends from a LTD Company.

People not realising this is a satire publication seems to end the theory of Brits being able to understand sarcasm even when it isn’t blatantly pointed out.

    11. FullTweedJacket on

Not to state the obvious…. But the people advocating for the ultra wealthy to pay more haven’t ‚gone quiet‘. A handful of millionaires donating to HMRC is pissing in the wind, the argument has always been about how do you *enforce* proper taxation on stupid levels of wealth.

„You wokies can all shut up now, HMRC has a donate here button, all our late-stage capitalist dystopian nightmare problems are solved!“ is an interesting take…

    12. Mr_Rockmore on

if you send them more tax than you owe they send you it back so this is just a load of rubbish

    13. Pleasant-Put5305 on

I feel tempted – as a full time disabled on benefits – to send the HMRC a few pounds just to shame the twats. I can manage to contribute to my fellow man, why can’t you?

    14. Big-Extension-1513 on

imagine if liniker and others banded together to donate 50 million to hmrc and set up a campaign group to lobby gov for a wealth tax after the fact,

be such great exposure and no one would be able to snarkidly say ‚why don’t you put your money where you mouth is ?‘

or we can sperg out at the notion they do that in the comments here

r/unitedkingdom ? bound to, its basically the starmer fan club

    15. deadeyes1990 on

I mean, tax isn’t a bloody tip jar. One millionaire sending HMRC a bit extra while everyone else carries on as normal fixes nothing — it just makes them the only mug who paid. They’re asking for the rules to change for everyone. That’s literally the point.

    16. Pheasant_Plucker84 on

So should we just pay more road tax too if we want our roads fixed sooner? It doesn’t work like that. Make them all pay. I eat it in our school and youth programmes.

    17. Mjukplister on

I can lie , if I was a millionaire I’d rather not ‘gift’ HMRC . Who would ? Just tax them

    18. MogiNatsuki on

Paying more money to people without accountability is like throwing money down the drain while hoping it makes a difference in this world!

    19. Justin_123456 on

Jesus, what right wing trolling. Taxation isn’t supposed to be voluntary, it’s the public reclaiming its share of the wealth that society created in the first place, for the benefit of everyone. HMRC is supposed to be institution we use to do that.

It’s like someone doing a really bad job at a service counter turning to you and asking if you just want to do it yourself. Thats not how this works.

    20. InMyLiverpoolHome25 on

As always reactionaries completely fail to understand the difference between individuals and systemic change.

1 person paying £50k is a drop in the ocean.

1 person pushing a change that results in 10,000 people paying 50k makes a huge change

Its what makes conservatives so susceptible to messaging from the likes of the daily mail. „Hey look, here’s an example of 1 person cheating the benefits system, therefore we need to cut benefit spending by 20% to stop this“

    21. Captain_English on

      Obviously satire, but…

If the money is coming from a publicly traded business, they actually can’t, because they’re obliged to return profit to the owner(s).

    22. mattymattymatty96 on

They are completely missing the point here.

This only works if ALL have to pay. The uk isnt a charity

    23. coffeesnob7 on

I wonder what wealthy contributors encouraged newsthump to write this 😅

    24. anotherbozo on

Satire aside, one person sending extra money != policy change that gets multiple wealthy people sending extra money.

    25. yeah but as others have pointed out , its not just paying tax, its a systemic thing that the rich paying more tax should reduce the burden on less well off folk. Doing it unilaterally does not necessarily lift the tax burden on the less well off , or direct the funding to the pot where it is needed

    26. Primary_Tune_9586 on

Anyone that wants to pay more is fucking weird

Just go give it to a charity

    27. randiebarsteward on

This is such a terrible response, it’s the same as „donate to charity then mate!“ argument, pathetic.

    28. But if they did that, we wouldn’t know about it, and they really want us to know what wonderful people they are!

    29. PricklyBumgrape on

Actually you can’t, they will eventually refund it or take it off your next tax bill

    30. DanBronze13 on

This is a non argument. The pay more if you want to. A higher wealth tax must be applied to all for fairness and to keep the funds predictable. If we can guarantee X amount of millions every year we can plan on spending it . A donation here and there from a few multi millionaires is a drop in the ocean and they shouldn’t take the burden that their fellow multi millionaires are failing to shoulder themselves

    31. Click4-2019 on

Im happy to pay more tax also, but only after I’m financially stable and able to pay my bills and things first.

I don’t agree though with HMRC saying you can just give them more tax if you want.

I’ve been working toward paying a tax bill in full, I’m happy to accumulate interest on it and pay them more than I originally owed.

But for whichever reason they seem unhappy about that and would rather accept less to get it paid sooner.

There seems to be a disconnect of logic, that they would rather tax the crap out of you while you are building up wealth which in turn limits your ability to do so.

Than let you do so, and receive higher taxes in return because when you have wealth you pay more income tax, you pay more national insurance, you pay more duties, pay more vat on the things you buy etc… and the thing is many people with wealth, once they have “enough” not to worry about their bills and enjoy a reasonable quality of life would probably not care about paying more tax as they have more money than they need.

It’s only the ultra rich who are greedy and always want more money that done, and they just exploit loopholes which government won’t do anything about

    32. GonzohunterHST on

Or Just pay the people more if you really wamt this and then they will be taxed on it.

This „the rich should pay more tax“ is so dumb. No. They should pay people more money they would actually benefit from or create more jobs.

    33. shimmynywimminy on

People saying that one millionaire choosing to pay more doesn’t do anything: by that logic does one millionaire dodging their taxes not change a thing either?

    34. I owe money from years back, ‚past the deadline‘ – they cannot chase me for it but are asking for a ‚voluntary contribution‘. It’s in the tens of thousands…

      hahahaa
