GLP-1 weight-loss drugs linked to “low” but real risk of hair loss, study finds
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, mainly used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity, are associated with a significantly higher risk of hair loss than other diabetes medications, according to a new study published in [The BMJ](https://www.bmj.com/content/394/bmj-2026-100077).
Importantly, the most observed cases of hair loss linked to GPL-1 were reversible, as hair follicles remained intact, the authors said.

From what I read a while ago, the nutrient deficiencies from the drugs makes the hair follicles shift from their growth stage to a shedding stage.
This is why it is necessary to ensure your diet is protein-rich, because deficiency in nutrients could stunt the growth of hair.
Is this another side effect of ‚eating less‘ rather than the drug itself?
It’s caused by not eating enough protein. Eat more protein and your hair won’t fall off
Rapid weight loss causes hair loss – telogen effluvium. It’s not a direct effect of the drug. It comes back, but it can a year to appreciate the change.
For me this was due to iron deficiency. I was taking tablets but levels wouldn’t go up. I got an iron infusion and my hair stopped falling out and grew back.
Been noticing my hair getting thinner. Or it could be that im 50
Good thing I’m fat AND bald.
Now all I need is to be rich so I can afford GPL-1’s
Is this head hair or body hair as well? I lost most of my head hair 40 years ago, so that wouldn’t bother me. But I’ve still got masses of body hair (despite two or three years on semaglutide).
Joke’s on you, I’m already bald
Rapid weight loss is more likely culprit.
Still, considering, in many cases it’s probably well worth it
All hair follicles remain intact. The idea that they don’t is basically old science. They took a bald cadaver’s scalp and grafted it onto a mouse and the follicles reinvigorated which included reconnecting arrector pili attachment which has been the basis for determining a dead follicle.
Jokes on GLP, I’m bald AND obese
Well see, we can’t rub our bellies any more.
Bro, people are so quick to make an excuse for every. Single. Side effect! You all sound like stoners before it was legalized. “It cures cancer! And it’s completely harmless”. Yes sure it’s a complete miracle drug that drops all excess weight, cures diseases, and has no side effects(they’re all conveniently attributed to weight loss when people who lose weight through traditional means don’t have those “side effects”).
Hair loss means weight loss too
Soo you lose weight, but also maybe your hair and definately your muscles which seem hard to reverse for some reason..
Was this in the regions typical for male pattern hair loss (DHT) or the usually durable sides and back areas too?
