Monkeys didnt turn into people, but way way way back in time there was a common ancestor that connects us. It isnt a direct first this then that kind of thing.
But if you go really simplistic, connect things in a way they arent connected and ignore millions and billions of years, then yeah you can make it seem real dumb.
