Every time we have a particularly bad wildfire season, there’s a news story that the wildfire service was recently cut. Couldn’t possibly be connected.
What was the headcount of that Dept before Trudeau?
I want to differentiate between „Carney slashed important long standing jobs“ and „Carney rolled back some of Trudeau’s spending“. I understand that it’s in the union’s best interest to say „always keep jobs for all our members please kthx“, but it might not necessarily be in Canadians‘ best interest.
This government has indiscriminately cut 10-15% of the federal public workforce, except for border security and defence.
Some may take exception to „indiscriminately“ but departments were told how much to cut and were left to decide how they would do it. Nobody asked if departments could absorb the cuts. They were just told to make it happen.
I know there’s a big perception that there’s a lot of waste in the government because of how much labour costs. In my experience, however, much of the waste is structural: lengthy approval processes, duplicated oversight, risk-averse decision-making and layers of bureaucracy. Cutting staff does not fix those problems and in many cases, it can make them worse by leaving fewer people to navigate the same inefficient processes.

I feel like taking a man like trumps grievances analytically is a trap . This would be happening for a hundred reasons and it’s dumb to pretend that if their were nonfires , we wouldn’t be hearing about milk ( lol) , military planes , imaginary drugs or what have you . The biggest problem we face is within as a lot of our media is anti Canada and promotes constant division and hesitation in the face of a basic and clear threat

What kind of fucking crayon eating do you have to do to think cutting fire fighting service funding in a country that gets annual wildfires?
Bait and switch leading to mismanagement. I guess Carney truly is a conservative. What an incredible disappointment especially for such a low bar. Shameful
Letting those people go, isn’t good for federal responses to emergency situations, but wild fire response is a provincial matter. The GOC may speed up some of the work in the federal response to a provincial request for assistance, but it’s not like they’re involved in telling federal resources from NL to move to AB in four hours.
Well this is a tough one. This „nerve centre“ is likely full of people twiddling their thumbs doing nothing much of the time, unless there is an active emergency situation going on that requires national coordination.
It seems to me like the sort of thing that needs to be able to ramp up and down according to the situation at hand, and instead of paying people to sit around waiting they could pull in leadership personnel from the various emergency services to coordinate if and when the time comes.
Also remember that wildland firefighting is a *provincial* responsibility, so how much national coordination is even needed here, really?
Not too long ago most seemed to agree that we had too many civil servants and that some cuts were necessary. So which is it?
It’s getting to the point where if Mark Carney stabbed some of you 20 times you’d say „well at least that’s better than Poilievre, he might have stabbed me 21 or 22 times, so I’m in favour of these 20 stab wounds.“

With no insight into the nature of the positions cut or what the impact is/will be, it’s hard to have an informed opinion on this.
