      As a Brit I used to wear jeans at beaches because I was self conscious about my leg hair. I’m 36 and only in the last 3 years I have started actually trying to wear shorts in the heat.

      Guess body shaming is alive and well.

      Nah, putting the leg up on someone’s desk and asking „Does mama like what she sees?“ is leg hair harassment.

      I had a coworker once who got accused of wearing too much perfume. They even sent a message in our group chat saying it was bothering people. 😂
      The funny thing is, I thought she smelled really good! It turned out it wasn’t even perfume—it was her fabric softener. I just thought the whole thing was so weird. Like… I’d understand if it was because her armpits smelled or something, but she literally just smelled nice. 😭

      Japan loves to add the word „harassment“ at the end of things LOL how is a man’s naturally-growing leg hair harassing anyone? Especially when the much worse alternative is sweaty and smelly dudes that much more actively assault your nostrils

      My personal biggest issue is that they skipped over my desired outcome of samue or monpe becoming acceptable office workwear and went straight to shorts.

      More generally, the issue isn’t leg hair, it’s the amounting of styling support guidance that needs to provided.

      is it also harassment if you show your hairy legs as a woman? I am sure that as a foreign woman I could out-hairy many Japanese men’s legs if I was so inclined….

      Can tell there are a lot of men here who don’t work office jobs in Japan.

      The women claiming ‚leg hair harassment‘ are kinda coming from a place of justified jealousy. Women in office environments are implicity socially required to shave their legs. Women who don’t regularly shave their legs feel the need to wear stockings or tights to cover them – which are hot as fuck in summer.

      If a woman showed up to work in a knee-length skirt with hairy legs, there is a damn good chance that some old showa-era boss (male OR female) would say something about it.

      So yeah before you get pissy at the chicks, understand that Tokyo ‚urges‘ men to wear shorts to work, but wont address the double standard that women have faced in office environments since forever.

      I thought we finally got to a point where we acknowledge that men shouldn’t comment on women’s appearance. Why is it now ok for women to comment and men‘s appearances?

      I already do that as extremely hairy guy and couldn’t give a shit about their opinion. It’s way too hot

      Let us be very clear. Having a human body is *never* harassment. If a society has found itself in a position to feel this axiom is not true, it is wrong and needs to be changed. Aside from expecting baseline hygiene (which is itself a bit problematic at times), there should never be any reason to deem the human body wrong or shameful or inappropriate. Ever.

      Honestly, this species… every time we pretend to have transcended our animal nature, we demonstrate how far we’ve fallen from what we are meant to be.

      Back in the 90s, I wore shorts for commuting and in the office in Tokyo, only changing into a suit for client meetings. A few of the other non-Japanese staff joined the shorts revolution but when the next summer rolled around an American supervisor introduced a dress code of collared shirt and no shorts.
