The 1972 result was one of the most lopsided in American history. Richard Nixon took 520 electoral votes to George McGovern’s 17, carrying every state in the union except Massachusetts. McGovern’s only other victory came in the District of Columbia. Within two years the Watergate scandal would force Nixon to become the only US president ever to resign.

Aside from all the insane stuff, Nixon did a good job as president. Created the EPA, normalized relations with China, ended the war with Vietnam, and continued desegregating the south.

Nixon only won 1972 election due to the crazy 1972 Democraric primary where Humphrey half-assed his campaign due to this being his 4th campaign, Muskie balling his eyes out on stage due to being called racial slurs, ans Wallace being shot 4 times and confined to a wheelchair, causing McGovern to win by default.
