California is straight up wrong on this map. California Family Code, sec 301 requires a person to be 18 to consent to marriage.
While are procedures for marriage or domestic partnerships for people under 18, that requires a court order with extensive involvement of social services to establish the grounds for an order, and the procedure is almost impossible for people under 17. So I say the map is at least disingenuous to suggest there is no age limit in California. California law doesn’t have an absolute, and recognizes justice may require flexibility, but you can’t just get married under 18.
Being from a state that doesn’t allow child marriage, I am surprised that any of the states are lower than 18. It just seems like everyone want to protect children, but then allow child marriage.
Mississippi is red because of that “accounting for exceptions” bit.
It is 21, in general, because that’s when Mississippi considers you an adult.
But there’s an exception of 17 for males and 15 for females with parental consent.
And an exception for below that requiring a judge allow it (and there be parental consent).
It’s actually common for those under 21 in Mississippi wanting to get married to move to a neighboring state in order to get married.
Nebraska is 19.

What I fucking hate about data like these is that – for many countries at least – girls can be married up to two or even three years younger than boys. Like, bloody hell.

Everything under 18 is creepy. And all those people saying parental or judge consent, ew. As if parents know what’s best for their kids, they definitely don’t. Especially when it’s not their damn life. If my parents would’ve agreed to have me marry underage (not that it’s legal where I live), I would’ve divirced the second I turned 18 and cut off all contact with them forever. And in some places a kid can’t get a divorce but can get married before 18. Make that make sense.
An exception is different from having a procedure available. An exception is predefined. A procedure just recognizes that the legislature cannot think of every possible scenario and wanted to be clear that a judge had authority to do something more without compromising the integrity of the statute. If that’s an “exception,” then the whole map should be red because judges can declare statutes invalid.
Am I being technical? Yes. But laws are technical and this map is way too over generalized to the point of being misleading.

You need parental consent and judicial approval for minor marriages in New Mexico. It’s not just anyone can get married here.

I’m from Kansas. The minimum age is NOT 15. In Kansas, the standard minimum age to marry is 18. However, 16 and 17-year-olds can marry with the written consent of a parent or legal guardian. In exceptional cases, a district court judge can authorize a marriage for a 15-year-old if it is determined to be in the minor’s best interest.
Every state except purple be like:
– Not old enough to buy liquor!
– Not old enough to vote!
– Not old enough to buy firearms!
– Not old enough to drive;
– Of course you can marry, age is just a social construct.
How many of these can be circumvented by parental permission (or coercion)?
I’m 50 and still too immature to be married. I don’t know how my wife and I made it 20 years.

In my experience in CA as a USMC it was common for guys getting into the military right out of HS with kids to marry their GF so she can live on base and get benefits for them mother and child. This was the 90’s so HS pregnancy was also common. I never saw a girl under 16 on base. I know each base back then also has a program so that the mother and sometime the father can finish HS (NOT GED) off base. Back then it was often at the community college and some bases they had tutors that would teach classes. It wasn’t GED but a real diploma.
Why did I look at the green state I live in, and think „Oh I can get married.“
