Turkish customs now have a code for ‘Armenia’: 077
As part of the Armenia–Turkey normalisation process, Turkey has taken a technical step to advance the direct trade scheme that began in May. In direct trade between the two countries, Turkish customs will use the code ‘077’ for Armenia. As has been the case for some time in the Turkey-Armenia Normalisation Process, another step has been taken quietly. The Ministry of Trade has signed off on a technical regulation as part of the normalisation process. This paves the way for the ‘Armenia’ country code to be selected directly on customs declarations for road, sea and rail transport with Armenia, according to a report in Milliyet, following the first concrete technical step in trade customs procedures between Turkey and Armenia – taken on 1 January 2023 specifically for direct air cargo transport – the scope of the measure has now been expanded. According to the latest directive sent by the Ministry of Trade’s General Directorate of Customs to customs directorates, in addition to the existing air freight arrangements, road, sea and rail transport have now been incorporated into the technical infrastructure. Consequently, in customs declarations relating to imports, exports and transit operations with Armenia via third countries, Armenia’s official country code, ‘077’, can now be selected directly.
It has been reported that technical adjustments have also been made to the Computerised Customs Operations (BİLGE) system in line with the directive. The Ministry requested that customs directorates be duly informed, “with the necessary care being taken in view of the sensitivity of the matter”.
