They were so much more intelligent than I think the average person realizes.
Phrenology is junk science on living people, but somehow it’s fine on extinct creatures? You can’t tell how capable a brain is or was by size alone. Neuronal density at a minimum, is necessary information.
Its not about the size, but the efficiency. Otherwise whales would be ruling. Going off what is left of the body is not as good as an indicator as what was left of their tools and other utlities.
I think they were just another race low-key.

Plop one in a school like we do our children and they’ll do nearly as well. From what i understand our brains were quite similar. They simply lacked the foundation of knowledge we have and they built.
So what happened to them?

Why would this be surprising? There weren’t that far removed from us.
Overlapping does not mean they could have discovered quantum mechanics.
I agree with basically all their conclusions, I just think their methods aren’t useful. Skull size or shape isn’t a good metric for intelligence, our best evidence is what cultural artifacts they left behind, which from what I remember were quite sophisticated. We’ve found specialized tools, face paint, cave paintings, ornamentation, and use of medicine and different cooking techniques. I think the things we should be focusing on are how Neanderthals shared and fostered knowledge across generations, as Sapiens’ ability to do so is a huge part of why we were so technologically advanced compared to other humans. But it’s not at all surprising that two human species so closely related shared similar intelligence.
I’ve seen what the current landscape is in America – this tracks.
This isnt news to anyone with a modicum of intelligence and basic knowledge of previous Hominids. Mostly seems to be confirmation more than anything.
Analysis of the tools and jewelry buried in neanderthal grave sites also indicate they had advanced tool making techniques. However the lack of uniformity in material and construction implies that the knowledge to create the objects was not widely shared and it seemed like each group had to “figure things out for themselves”
Rutger Bregman’s book Humankind has a chapter dedicated to this. The theory is posed is that even though the Neanderthal had advanced cognitive function and problem solving abilities, they had trouble learning from and teaching one another like many higher apes today do. Whereas we Homosapiens were a little dumber but WAY more able to copy one another.

Considering they had pine tar glue factories and many other highly sophisticated activities I’d say yes.
I read that the reason we prospered over them was due to much better communicative/social skills which left them, and their arguably superior intelligence in the dust
However there was interbreeding between Neanderthal and Homosapien, and this is probably an inflammatory thing to suggest, but i wonder if autism isn’t our genetic link to back to Neanderthal antecedents
