Israel plans to mass-produce its own JDAM precision-guided bombs within two years. The goal is to reduce Israel’s dependence on foreign weapons, especially after the United States delayed some bomb shipments in 2024.
Israel is investing heavily in local production of bombs, ammunition and raw materials. It wants to replace weapons used in recent wars, build larger reserves and make sure the IDF can continue fighting even when foreign supplies are delayed.
Israel is also greatly increasing production of Arrow missile interceptors. Large weapons deals with Germany and other foreign countries have brought money into Israel’s defense industries, helping them expand production for both Israel and international customers.
Israel will continue working closely with allies, but it also wants the ability to produce more of its most important weapons at home.
this is a pretty significant shift in how israel thinks about its defense supply chain. for decades they could count on us resupply which kept domestic production costs down. now theyre treating that guarantee as unreliable which is a major strategic pivot. the germany deals funding the expansion make sense because all that new factory capacity needs to get paid for somehow
Israel can increase local production and give up US aid.
It cannot reduce susceptibility to UN sanctions if the US pulls diplomatic cover at the security council.
If Israeli leaders (at least the ones coming in after the October election) were astute, they would give up the 3.8B per year aid in exchange for continued UNSC coverage
Israel is a tiny country of 10 million people, and many of those are either actively serving in the military or doing religious studies – both subsidized by the state.
Domestic manufacturing can only cover so much, especially when paid for by the Israel and not bankrolled by the US. I believe they are capable of that production, but unless they find a way to monetize it as well, there will be no way to distance Israel from the US because the budget and manpower simply aren’t there.
People really have absolutely no idea how IR incentives work if they think withdrawing security aid will somehow increase American leverage over Israel.
