You know, based on how difficult it’s been to get a straight answer on this, I suspect Carney gave them 50% after operating cost, omitting the debt repayment.
And if so, that is bloody embarrassing for Canada.
Let’s see the text. Let’s see who is lying.
The way this thing is unfolding; i am afraid we really caved in to their demands and US will be earning free money from our investments. This time trump actually did ‘art of the deal’ if true.
Based on Carney’s repeated vagueness over this deal I suspect we just caved.
The economic value to Canada of having the bridge open is enormous. Carney probably decided it was ultimately still a net benefit to Canada to have the bridge open asap despite worse terms. However, politically it’s a terrible look for him so they’re trying to downplay it.
This is a disaster for Canada. We financed the entire bridge, keep all the debt and financing risk, but now have to give the US [50%](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-07-17/carney-s-gordie-howe-bridge-deal-splits-50-of-net-revenue-for-15-years?accessToken=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJzb3VyY2UiOiJTdWJzY3JpYmVyR2lmdGVkQXJ0aWNsZSIsImlhdCI6MTc4NDMwNTEyOCwiZXhwIjoxNzg0OTA5OTI4LCJhcnRpY2xlSWQiOiJUSUJIRzNLSUpIOTQwMCIsImJjb25uZWN0SWQiOiIzNTk2NzdDODA0QTY0N0JGQTZDQTdEMzgzM0VCNjRCQSJ9.sH1woMeKVF9PJBMLZFt8RjXKFa4rKGf-5siuR2xMKY8&leadSource=article-gifting) of operating net revenue (not profit) for 15 years *before* we’ve recovered our investment. On top of that, the US reportedly gets veto rights over certain toll changes.
Carney is now deliberately misleading the public about the terms to play this down, claiming the revenue sharing would only happen after we finish paying off the debt on the bridge, but the actual agreement details say otherwise. This means Canada didn’t just give Trump a symbolic win. We gave him a big economic concession to unblock a bridge we had already paid for.
But of course everyone will keep giving Carney the benefit of the doubt, just like what happened with the DST repeal. If caving to Trump won’t hurt him politically, then this definitely won’t be the last time he does it.
Sounds like the original agreement and nothing has changed, except Lutnick and Trump trying to make themselves look good while bloviating.
I wonder if the truth is somewhere in the middle. The original deal is still there and is just being modified by this side deal.
We know one of the concessions is to allow the US a say in the toll level (which was a bit surprising since they have such input for other bridges).
From what I understand, the initial tolls were aiming at around half the Ambassador which would allow us to fully recoup in a few decades.
I’m thinking that perhaps this agreement increases the tolls and it’s that increase that would be split. The Maroun’s would be happy since the price would be closer and so they might not lose as much business. The US will get some regional funding. Canada would get a larger cut which can pay things down faster or invest in the region ourselves.
Of course, this is all just a thought experiment until we see the wording, possibly after the bridge opens to avoid any potential mercurial change of mind.
Shut the bridge down. The bridge only opens when Canada gets 100% of the tolls until the cost is covered. In the meantime America and their old bridge is closed until further notice.
I love how anyone thinks there was any other way out of this other than sitting on a closed bridge for 2 years.
The Americans are ruled by emotions and untrustworthyness, and unfortunately we are connected.
If people have an issue with the deal, regardless of what it is, look at the americans that elected them, not the people we elected that have to deal with this nonsense.

The deal was 50% of the profits. Above and beyond toll revenue, employees salaries, bridge up keep and repairs, and and payments for the bridge… Its anything made after everything is paid…. Is my understanding.
Whatever. Wait the trump admin out and go back to the old legal agreement where canada gets all revenue.
The Trump admin doest respect deals, why should we ? Tell the future new federal government ( fingers crossed its a democrat) that we will return to the old deal and usa gets no revenue.
This will be part of healing from the disastrous Trump admin. And it will show that hopefully the new federal government is discarding trumpism. It would be a small part of moving towards the cordial relationship we had before Trump screwed everything up.
Why hasn’t America just released the contents of the deal publicly then? Seems like the Trump administration can embarrass Carney simply by releasing the actual contract, **if** Carney is lying.
I understand there’s a Bloomberg article claiming to have seen the text, but they haven’t actually released the text of it either. Why are both sides keeping the actual contract secret?
Carney, on **two separate occasions**, has stated explicitly that the sharing of toll income doesn’t happen until **after** debt payments are made. If he screwed up the statement the first time, that was monumental screw up, and I find hard to believe that someone like Carney would repeat that twice. Someone would’ve informed him after the first press conference on the inaccuracy of his statement.
Also, the current American administration lies repeatedly on so many things.
In this light, I’m much more inclined to believe Carney than Lutnick.
I’m fine with this. However any and all revenue must first be applied to a bill for half the cost of construction, at a 20% interest rate, compounded daily.
I guess the big question is whether the split happens before or after Canada is reimbursed for the principal. Lutnick is saying before, which would definitely look bad for Carney and the LPC if that’s what the agreement is.
If it’s after Canada gets reimbursed for the principal then I think this is a win for Carney. We’ll have to see what the actual agreement states to be sure.
The U.S. is trying to run trade and spending like a lemonade stand. It literally makes no difference to our economies when central banks create money out of thin air.
From the construction, Canada has already generated about $4B in economic activity.
Let’s get back to mutual benefiting agreements. This back and forth isn’t going to end with all the showboating.
“Cooperation should not mean subordination” – Mark Carney.
It’s always “we got a better deal than x”. It’s fragile. Weak. Embarrassing. Trump is the king of an embarrassing deal.
I really hope we can get back to making agreements that both parties can be proud of. Until then the cycle won’t be broken especially if someone feels like they’re getting screwed.
Like others have pointed out, the only difference is that the US federal government gets some of the net revenue after the debt repayment, whereas before the State of Michigan got it. By the time the debt is paid there will have been 4 or 5 different US administrations and this one will be renegotiated anyway.
Carney is just letting Trump has his headline and means nothing to Canada
ok… that’s how i know that the deal isn’t as bad as people make it out to be
probably
nutlick has got to have one of the worst track records ever
The U.S. was always supposed to get 50% of the net profits the only difference is it paid immediately instead of after the bridge construction debt was paid in 15 years. There will be no net profit for sometime since all operating costs come first including the payments and interest on the debt on and annual basis. More blow hart Trump ballyhoo when nothing substantially changed.
