We’re here because boomers refuse to regulate anything including AI so in a roundabout way yes

    2. Greenmachine95834 on

Baby boomers who refuse to retire are the root cause of much of Americas problems. Blocking the normal progression of many careers because they remain with a death grip on high level positions.

    3. Over the past 7 years, Indeed has announced roughly
      4,500+ layoffs.

      March 2023: ~2,200 people (15% of workforce)

      May 2024: ~1,000 people (8%)

      July 2025: ~1,300 people (6% of segment)

Indeed can eat my dog’s asshole.

The wealthy and politically powerful Baby Boomers perfected the art of kicking the can down the road. They privatized the gains, socialized the costs, and left future generations holding the bag—all while believing their wealth would protect their own families from the consequences. If you weren’t already rich, you were someone else’s exit strategy. That’s the opposite of E Pluribus Unum.

    5. There are like 8 baby boomers at my company of over 600 people. There is 1 in senior management and the others can’t retire in their positions. I look at them as my future, still at the company and unable to retire. I’m in pharma mfg. People in pharma used to be able to retire, but not anymore.

    6. Oh look, another publications attempt to divide society, so we dont look at who is really hoarding our wealth. Yes the boomers have more than most of us; but they aren’t all billionaires.

    7. Actually I think the tech overlords don’t the unless pursuit of profits over people are America’s real labor problem. Stop the shit distractions. The problem has always been class war.

    8. If I understood correctly… We have a labor mismatch problem.

I have a decade of software engineering exp, and right now it seems like we have an excess of software engineers and not enough nurses or manual labor workers.

In my mind, it sounds like we could solve this problem by paying people enough to start taking these positions. However it doesn’t seem like the market has adapted to the shortage by increasing pay. Maybe that’ll change.

When software was booming and pay was high, lots of people started learning it. Maybe if pay for nursing or blue collar jobs increases, people will pursue those jobs. This seems like a problem that *should* figure itself out with basic economics.

    9. It would be good if people would actually read articles before commenting and spewing out their pre-conceived notions based on flawed information.

Funny how every problem is never the execs chasing margins, its grandpa and a chatbot somehow.

    11. Life-Ship3628 on

Younger baby boomer here , worked hard my entire life, payed taxes did what I was supposed to do.
Trillionaire has no income and paying little to no taxes
      And I am the problem?

    12. saintdudegaming on

These are the same fuckers NOT hiring older workers while complaining about fewer babies being born to fill their ranks and all the while bitching to the heavens that ’no one wants to work anymore!!‘.

So in short, older workers are a problem but you won’t hire them, you won’t pay people enough so they start families and they won’t pick your under paid positions because it’s not fucking worth it. Am I missing anything?

    13. DangerousCap7973 on

Sorry the birthrate has fallen so far so fast that you cannot find people to work for crap pay.

Hey! What if you actually paid people 35 bucks an hour to start? Instead of the fed minimum of 7.25.

    14. CyberFireball25 on

As an aside, I would love a meta analysis of how many legitimate unique jobs actually get hired through these job sites now, vs how many are ghost jobs

    15. The problem the article is talking about is that Boomers are exiting the labor market and there’s not enough people to fill the openings that they are leaving.

Which is pretty much the opposite of what people reacting to just the headline are complaining about.

    16. tapdancinghellspawn on

Good job on keeping everyone made at each other so that they ignore the techbros and Wall Street and politicians who are causing the problems.

    17. „and Baby Boomers are retiring faster than younger generations can replace them. “

I thought the problem was that baby boomers were hanging on to their jobs too long and wouldn’t or couldn’t retire.

    18. Yeah, reduce the retirement age and fix Medicare do you don’t go broke in retirement.

    19. partcanadian on

just replace Baby Boomers by a color or a religion.
I mean: and you see there are ways not to say things.

    20. justsomepotatosalad on

I work in tech and it’s rare to see anyone still around after 55 because they’re laid off first due to blatant ageism. Meanwhile I’m asked to do the jobs of all the boomers and other people that were laid off “with AI”. Where exactly are these aging boomers I’m supposedly competing with?

    21. Three_Twenty-Three on

A lot of these problems zoom in on this.

      >Employers in healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, and the public sector keep telling us the same thing: they cannot find enough qualified workers, even in a slower labor market.

Then *make* qualified workers. Stop expecting that college is a job-training thing that produces floor-ready workers with your exact skill set. Invest in hiring workers and training them for your jobs. But then you also have to *keep* them, and that means seeing them as long-term investments and paying them well enough that they don’t have to switch jobs every few years to see meaningful pay increases.

Build loyalty by not using your employees as disposable, interchangeable property that you can drop whenever the wind blows a little differently. Protect them and don’t make them live in constant fear that you’re going to ditch them for offshore contracting, H-1Bs, or superficial intelligence.

    22. JesusWuta40oz on

I hate this attempt at labeling baby boomers as the problem. The issue is a the economy that built their growth and money doesnt exist anymore because the top one percent have taken that wealth for themselves for this generation.

    23. reddit_equals_censor on

„aging baby boomers are america’s real labor problem“

and here silly me thought, that the issue is evil corporations and epstein class billionare scum abusing people and not owning the work of our labor, or hell making a half livable wage with a properly adjusted minimum wage for inflation and what not.

also where’s the 30 hour work week? where’s the free public healthcare, where’s the working cheap high quality public transit??? where are all the fundamental social safety nets, that keep people from becoming homeless or die in lots of europe???? where is any of this in the usa???

where are the dirt cheap fixed dirt cheap rent beautiful commie blocks, build at a massive rate to make sure cheap great housing is available to all???? where is the end to absurd zoning bs, that prevents midsized multi family homes from being build past a bs line creating the nightmare dystopia, that is the suburbs in the usa???

oh ah it is „the aging boomer’s fault“ and not the epstein class’s fault for shitting on the public, that they murder and enslave right?

but i guess i am just wrong, isn’t that right bullshit article and we should go back to culture war, instead of class war again.

anyways, who owns this fortune website? another epstein class pedo?

    24. ProgressBartender on

Maybe we should stop raising the retirement age for social security and Medicare

    25. QuestFarrier on

The problem is it’s a smorgasbord of issues. Aging boomers don’t really train people well and plenty of them double dip in retirement while still working full time in senior roles (that the younger gens can’t level up to) AND corporations are making it so that most of us have to work ourselves to death just to make ends meet and have a lil bit of fun on the side.

These polarizations are fools game. Let’s use some nuance.

    26. ZealousidealDegree4 on

I’m the child of Boomers that passed away. What I’ve seen is a bunch of elderly that have to work- though they don’t get all the publicity those boomers that spend and spend.  They are neglected by our culture, and age hate is super hip now. Sucks to be young, sucks to be old. Opportunity is rare, as the oligarchs prevail. Bums me out.

    27. earthwormjimwow on

Blaming boomers for not retiring is moronic and will solve nothing. This isn’t a generational issue or specifically a boomer issue. Boomers just happen to be the first generation to significantly benefit from the massive improvements in longevity and life spans, due to advances in medical care and medicine.

This is simply the new normal for people living longer. Systemic changes are needed to solve problems like this, not generational blame.

    28. MartyMacGyver on

      Bullshit.

The contract with American workers is fundamentally broken and until we fix that, the insanity will continue – and AI, useful in some ways but not a replacement for people, is just an excuse to make even more people unemployed to drive wages and living standards down even more.

Train people, pay them properly (especially teachers), mandate universal healthcare, and tax the rich. Bring the oligarchs to heel.

    29. HattoriHanzo9999 on

Oh sure, sure. The boomers are taking all those programming jobs I keep hearing about getting cut.

    30. CrazyCoKids on

Baby Boomers are retiring faster than they can be replaced?

Where in *the HELL* do you live where employers *replace* baby boomers?! Cause I wanna live there!

Boomer retires? Everyone else just gets told to pick up the slack. Once 5 boomers retire maybe one position finally opens up… *Part time*.

Indeed, i have never seen a bigger load of horse shit in my life.

    31. BothDivide919 on

A failed education system is America’s labor problem and yes, baby boomers are the cause of it. AI is useless at the current moment, yes, but it may potentially replace jobs in the future.

    32. iwishiwasahacker on

Billionaires who don’t pay their fair share in taxes are the real problem.

    33. > Employers in healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, and the public sector keep telling us the same thing: they cannot find enough qualified workers, even in a slower labor market.

It’s bullshit. Every company who says this is a company that’s not willing to pay people what they’re worth. Pay more money and you’ll be shocked at how many good candidates suddenly show up.

    34. this native is so tired… one day avocado toast is to blame, today it’s boomers. the truth? it’s the billionaires and millionaires and their corporate greed. they want to do nothing but divide the rest of us until we are so distracted we don’t blame them.

just a reminder that millionaires and billionaires reach the cap on social security on january 1st while the rest of us poors pay our 12% all year.

    35. I think a lot of folks would look into medical careers more, if it didnt cost half a mil to get there

Should be completely free for those who qualify.
