1.44 mb is a lot actually by the standards of some contests like this. If you really wanted,  you could fit a 20 hours long 3d rpg in it.

    2. I remember someone created a game which is procedurally generated first person shooter and the file is only kilobytes or something.

    3. For those who dont know filesizes.

Take out your phone. Take a picture. You busted it.

You could fit many Pico-8 games in 1.44mb. Those are so small they’re stored in the meta data of pngs

JS13k. Make a Java script game in 13Kb (zipped)

      Edit: starts next month.

    6. So question, is there compression programs/techniques that can squeeze a 100MB+ game onto a 1.44MB floppy?

I have always been fascinated by the compression concept and software.

    7. Love this! I wonder if there will be others for other common formats (720k, 360k, etc).

    8. I still use floppy disks regularly to transfer G-Code to our older CNC machines at work. I’ve tried for years now to have [USB/Floppy emulators](https://www.gotekemulator.com/) installed but I might as well be talking to a tech illiterate wall.

Anyone remember Jetpack X-Mas or Word Rescue. It was quite a time to be a gamer in the floppy days

If you haven’t yet, check out pico 8. It’s amazing what people can make within constraints. It took awhile to figure how to get the game roms and then I discovered the game rom was the png file!

I used to put the original Cave Story onto a floppy and take it to school to play it in the lab.

Every single pre-internet console game was fully completed by the time you bought the disk. *Maybe* there’ll be a 1.1 version a few months later or in another region but the game is going to work right out of the box without needing to download day 0 patches.

But instead we get 50GB day 0 patches, and soon there isn’t even going to be a disk

As the original Elite fitted inside 32KB, 1.44MB can hold a lot of gameplay.
