I made this visualization. Data source: FIFA EPTS 50 Hz broadcast ball-tracking data, together with broadcast footage and stadium reference geometry used for the reconstruction. I am treating possible cable contact as a testable hypothesis, not proof. The goal of publishing the data and code is to let others check the reconstruction, assumptions and alternative explanations.

Am I the only one who doesn’t give a shit about this? The ball dropped around the halfway line and wasn’t an immediate goal scoring opportunity.

Wouldn’t a 122kmh kick be a far higher speed than any recorded ball speed that is shown for penalty takers?
Maybe I’m remembering those stats wrong though.

Long balls aren’t high completion passes. Even without the wire existing, the play could have been near identical. What percentage of Nylands kick-outs were retained by Norway vs what percentage were controlled by England vs what percentage did Haaland jut tackle an England player without getting called for a foul. Those are the stats that matter

Okay why don’t we have the camera attached to wire footage itself? I’m assuming these cameras are recording all the time. So if the wire shakes, wouldn’t the camera itself show something??

Couldn’t the anomaly simply be wind? How does that factor into the model?
And wouldn’t it be better to have the control be all of Nyland’s kicks throughout the tournament, then also Pickford’s kicks as a comparison for consistency.
Also, how does collision with a cable only cause a 4 km decrease in speed? The ball seemingly still has upwards motion after the point of collision?

Is this the only kick that shows such a significant increase in vertical speed before reaching the top of its flight? The chart shows a pretty significant increase in rate of climb well before the wire is supposed to have been hit so already looks like a big outlier even before that.

It’s also an outlier in that the trajectory of the ball kept rising before it’s apex height, much like a golf ball hit by a professional. This is due to backspin which, much like a golf shot, cause the ball to fall much softer and more vertically.

So this graph shows it’s the only kick with the same height and speed as the long kicks, that ended up short. If that’s not a sign it hit something..
