Donald Trump and Hunter Biden convictions shed light on the mental gymnastics of political scandals

Recent research provides evidence that voters spend greater mental energy defending politicians from their own party and finding faults in politicians from the opposing party when faced with news of criminal convictions. The findings suggest that political party loyalty directly influences whether people view legal proceedings as legitimate or as politically motivated weapons. The study was published in the [*American Behavioral Scientist*](https://doi.org/10.1177/00027642261459236).

Every Redditor should read this study and reflect.
Correct. Commonly known as, mental gymnastics. Here to tell you, partisans go through it.
Greater than what? Last year? What is even compared here?
Also, the example seems badly chosen. A person without a political position buying a gun while in rehab or whatever is not on the same scale as the president commiting fraud. I’m sure there are plenty of better examples to underline the proposal, whatever it even means
What-aboutism is the argument of the weak minded.
Just saw this with the Graham Planter debacle.
Some people I interacted with admitted it was ok to elect a rapist if it meant a Republican wouldn’t win.
Some voters maybe, I certainly put more effort into scrutinizing politicans of my own party.
I feel like this should be a subject in school, spend a semester or two talking about things like belief, cognitive dissonance, confirmation bias, Us vs Them, etc.
There was a time when tribalism was an excellent survival instinct. Now it causes nothing but trouble. It makes people want to believe lies that align with their beliefs and ignore truths that goes against it. It causes far more harm than good.
How about if someone is a convicted criminal they are not allowed to run for office and if they are convicted while in office they lose their position. Stop wasting energy on criminals.
What about the people who aren’t stupid enough to join a party?
People that idolize politicians and political parties are weird.
Why does r/science allow drivel like this? A 12 year old figures stuff like this out.
I had a throw down with my wife and some of my kids about this.
The context is a no-brainer local race. We are all going to vote for the same person. The other person is *so* bad, there’s just not even a path to vote for that person. The best case scenario for that candidate is that I choose to write in someone, because, in no world will I ever vote for the right winger.
But my family (classic libs) have to spend a lot of energy tearing down this guy we’re ALL going to vote for.
Can we just *not*? There is *literally* no other option. The primary is over. The end. We have two choices, and as sensible people, we will choose the lesser evil.
Why do we have to rehash it *now*?
Yep, it why I no longer support any party. I have no one to defend. Life is so much easier.
I’m of the opinion that all criminal politicians should be locked up, my preferred party or not.
Yes, politics is like team sports now. These people are employees, not celebrities, it’s incredibly stupid to treat them as gods, rulers, kings, you name it.
This study seriously sucks. Comparing a rapist with 34 felonies to a guy who’s son, not himself, his son had three felonies is asinine. Yes I’ll defend Joe who was not a criminal, WTAF are they even trying to get at? I can throw plenty of shade at dems, like backing Platner for so long, but there is no where near the level of blind sycophancy with dems as there is on the right, it’s a laughable assertion. Trump says it himself, he could shoot someone and he probably wouldn’t lose another point of support.
Would be rad if this sub was about science and not politics.
Learning to admit when you’re wrong is really tough. Comforting lies, and all that. It helps to be jaded.
Lol not me, bud. I spent more time bemoaning Menendez’s scintillating idiocy to get jammed up that way than anything else about all that. Sure he’s a dem. Who cares? He was a dumb piece of shit who got caught being stupid. I don’t want some dumbass like that representing my side even if he wasn’t a fuckin petty thief.
Classic cognitive dissonance and doubling down behavior. As said, behavior of the willfully ignorant, and common.
Imagine being so dedicated to a politician you will never meet and who doesn’t know you exist.
Really bizarre.
If only politicians that win were not corrupt, we can all sleep easy!
