      It’s fascinating and my guess is that there are differents reasons why it is so.

      The countries where Islam is predominant are red and it is culturally understandable why it is so.

      Japan is also red. But I wouldn’t have guessed that Australia and NZ would be orange.

      The contrast between Bangladesh and India is also interesting from my European perspective.

      Is there any study done about the data presented here?

      I live in Ireland. Boys and girls might have separated into sides at pre teen dances but we are absolutely not Middle East levels of separation.

      Surprising result from the Nordic countries. I know loneliness is generally a problem up there, but I thought their progressive stances would’ve helped abate any integration issues

      the switch between india and myanmar is nuts, same with north africa to subsaharan africa, but its pretty interesting to see the gdr borders and russian be pretty clearly defined too.

      The differences within North America are hard to discern. Like here in Florida, I wonder if the Caribbean + Black influence on the state is why the gender friendship ratio is higher. Mexico is generally high but the Texas border region, predominantly Mexican, is red.

      Me as an Israeli: „Yeah those backwards Arabs still segregate, yeah here look how the Europeans are not afraid of casual friendships, Muslims are so f….“ *pans to Israel painted just as red as the rest of the region*

      I found it in general interesting that cultural equality between genders is not always translated into inter-gender friendships. European countries for example being either rather conservative here with ~0,5 or lower with general high equality vs countries which would generally score lower in cultural equality still scoring high to very high on the inter-gender friendships.

      Having lived in both, there’s no way Australia is more segregated than Nepal

      Was wondering why the UK is not higher, but if its off Facebook friends that would make sense as young people don’t have Facebook

      Somewhat but not completely surprising here in Ireland, I grew up with having some female friends but now I have none and I’d say that’s quite common with some exceptions.

      As an Egyptian who lived in Saudi, I agree with Saudi but Egypt and most North African countries are nowhere near the same level of segregation as in Saudi Arabia. The vast majority of schools, universities, etc. are gender integrated and people make friends normally. This data is kinda bs

      Other than FB not being a reliable source for deciding friendships, I think selection bias should be talked about as well. In lower income countries, I would bet that mostly wealthier people are using FB. In “the West”, everyone (except maybe some younger people) are on FB. I would also guess that higher income people in a society are more integrated. So this explains some of the differences between Mexico and the US, for example.

      It is interesting that the Muslim majority areas in Indonesia are very well integrated, and the only more segregated areas are the hindu-majority areas.

      Since this is based on FB, please don’t take this seriously.

      I feel like there’s a huge generational divide that’s being unaccounted for. Maybe it’s anecdotal but where I live older people tend to stick pretty strictly to same sex friendships, while young friendgroups are almost always mixed

      I feel as like this is measuring something else than „likeliness of opposite genders to be friends“
