On the topic of freedom of speech, people should be held accountable to what they post. Not talking about criticism of the government or labour, that’s just a daily occurrence in Malta, though only for extreme stuff like hate speech and calls to violence. Freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequences.
This man is truly incredible. He got upset over a political cartoon, and now he’s using every excuse to crack down on free speech, including trying to remove online anonymity.
Anyone who’s been online since the ‘90s knows anonymity is essential for free speech. Without it, people can be silenced by employers, governments, or anyone else with power. We can’t let that happen.
If you can’t handle criticism, you shouldn’t be a public figure.
He’s also using the death of his friend, the DJ, to push this agenda. But people are responsible for their own actions. If you’re a public figure and your actions draw criticism, that’s part of the job. Blaming free speech instead of taking responsibility on your life choices is a dangerous and we can’t afford this especially given the current state of politics in Malta .
