The new requirement was clearly communicated.
This has been massively publicised to dual nationals for months. As a dual national myself I cannot believe you could’ve missed this news.

When I first read the title I thought it was the EU causing issues but no, it’s the UK causing issues by legislating poorly (in my opinion anyway). While at the same time travelers not following their own countries guidelines/rules that were set months before travelling.
So she could have prevented this….
It’s absolutely reasonable for The British Government to require British Citizens enter with a British Passport – regardless of any other passports the individual might possess.
Why would her parents let her leave the country without a British Passport? It reads like she did not even have one? That sounds ridiculous.
This is squarely on the parents.
Even before this legislation was passed. Who on earth would leave their home country for a trip without its passport? I am a dual national and my entire life anytime I was planning on leaving my home country, I would always make sure I had that country’s passport with me, and was up to date.
Wait so she’s dual national, meaning she probably has an Italian passport too. Why didn’t she just say she’s Italian and go with that?
This rule change has been in the news for months. This is the parents’ fault.

They (Home Office) added: “We also remained in contact regarding a passport application, and once the required information was received and checks were concluded, a passport was issued within eight days.”
… whilst I agree this new law is a little frustrating for some folks, it seems the Dad is/was incredibly stubborn and refused to apply for a passport until 5 weeks into this ordeal lol
Always been a rule in most countries that if you are a national of that country you MUST enter with a passport of that country. And it’s a legitimate piece of legislation.

If you want to have dual nationality, the least you can do is understand the rules.
Why would you ever try to enter a country on the basis of being a national if you don’t have the credential that proves you are?
An acquaintance with dual nationality kids also got into same trouble in EU. Surprisingly, that one travels with one passport of that country they’re *returning to* doesn’t seem to be common sense.
Don’t understand why she couldn’t just fill out an ETA, come in as an Italian tourist, and just stay.
I could use being stranded in Rome for six weeks too, but then I remember I’m from the Schengen area. Too bad, I guess.
For anyone in that situation, couldn’t they fly to Ireland on their EU Passport, enter the CTA, then take the ferry to the uk where there won’t be a passport check?

Okay, I was confused and read the article
-she never had a British passport, only her (Italian?)
-the policy was changed in February and she left the UK in April.
-Brexit is the reason her only passport required a visa (the ETA)
-since said visa is only for tourists and she lives there full time, she legally can’t apply for it. So she could not travel with her only passport.
What a brilliant excuse to extend an overseas holiday.

Screw the UK. Boy they make it a nightmare for anyone going there or even just passing through.
This is just carelessness. I’m a dual national, British and French, and it should be common knowledge that you enter each country on the passport of that country. This law is a completely normal thing for the majority of the world, and if a few careless Brits can’t handle the transition, that’s their own fault.
