      Better than authoritarian countries calling themselves „Republics“, like, North Korea’s official name is „The People’s Democratic Republic of Korea“, matter of fact, any country with the name „Democratic Republic“ in it, is most certainly *not* one.

      The Vatican does at least elect the Pope, which technically makes it more democratic than some countries not on this list lol

      North Korea has Democratic in its name, but its constitution assigns a monarchy-like role to the Kim family.

      What about the „United Kingdom,“ which is a democracy, but technically, they don’t have a constitution, and the ultimate power lies with the King. 

      Edit: I am only referring to self-identification, not where power actually resides. It is true that the king doesn’t have actual power, but has to rubber-stamp everything. The government is „His Majesty’s Government“.

      So the opposite of North Korea (DPRK), the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, that’s not a democracy, vs a United Kingdom that is a democracy. And since this post was reffering to countries that do not self-identify as democracies, I believe that it fits.

      The USA is not a democracy either, it is a constitutional Republic. Ask Charlie Kirk.

      What about Belarus? Alexander Lukashenko himself declared himself „the last European dictator“. Or is a simple declaration by the president not enough to add to this map? Because it is true that the state as such has not declared anything like that about itself, only the head of the state.

      TIL Brunei is still a country btw.
      Huge eu4 / history nerd so I knew the historic sultanate, but I thought it merged into Malaysia.

      UAE, Oman and The Vatican shouldn’t belong on this list. Maybe Brunei as well as I don’t know enough.

      However Qatar literally had a referendum abolishing representative democracy, Saudi has none outside local elections and Afghanistan isn’t democratic at all and doesn’t claim to be.

      UAE \ Saudi Arabia are probably more democratic than 50% of „democratic world“. Irony

      China openly stated that it is both democratic and a dictatorship.

      The very first sentence of Chinese constitution „China is a socialist state under the people’s democratic dictatorship“

      All of those countries are theocracies and all but Vatican City are Islamist.
