LINE is just terrible, why do people still use it.

Oh boi. Not really sure whether such decision will save the future of the app.

They are trying to become the wechat of japan.

It is the worst messaging app I have ever used. Hopefully it will make people drop it

complete monopoly. Japan needs to force crossplatform messaging or this shit go on for decades.

I’d 100% pay 500 yen a month for a version of line with zero ads/social media. Just group/private chats and calls.

It’s shocking that they are allowed to put this behind a paywall: „Premium Blocking,“ which allows you to remove yourself from the friend list of someone you’ve blocked
While people can block undesirables – such as stalkers and nutters – your profile photo, display name, display message is still visible to them and they will see updates to it. I know people who have been affected by this in the past.

They might be barking up the wrong tree here. Alot of Japanese people have been using Whatsapp more and more

I only do it via pure obligation with the album feature they use which is fairly useful for family and friends but that’s it, wish I could opt out of the annoying AI shit I’ll never use.

If you want to circulate the economy. You need to pay people more. That’s what happens when the finite amount of salary paid out is so low there is no disposable income for anything because every single penny is required for survival.

Can I transfer my line stamps to iMessages please, then I’ll never have to use LINE again.

Line ads are quite bad from business standpoint. I get tons of traffic from old people (statistics say 60+ yes old) and they immediately bounce. Meanwhile Google and meta ads actually bring a wider demographic. I’ve also filtered out that old audience and still not impressed.

Line was ahead of its time. The best messaging app available. Fun interface with the unique sticker concept. It had stickiness. I convinced overseas WA users to use it. That was a decade ago or whatever. Zero innovation. Infinite bloat and shitty design. Stickers behind a pay wall. All while their competitors continued to innovate. I’m so happy to see them speed up their demise so I can 100% switch to other platforms.

So any games that go through LINE won’t be playable unless you are subscribed? My mom has been addicted to that Disney Tsum game and I originally helped link her account via LINE. If this becomes a thing and she loses access to her account… she’s going to be so upset…

They recently made photo albums a paid feature which sucks for our family group. Dropping each photo as an individual message on its own sucks.

I already use Linemo. It’s fine.

LINE sucks when you need to install the app on a new device. Often, you’ll have your entire message history erased. And LINE backups are not cross platform between Android and iOS.

Japan locking itself into shitty tech with a terrible ecosystem is such a Japan thing to do.

LINE has been up to these hijinx for awhile now and greedy doesn’t even begin to describe it. They are literally trying to bully you into premium. Try to use the app as normal and previously normal functions now force a pop-up telling you that you need to „upgrade“ to this now premium feature.
Some of these downgrades have been incremental. First you could „unsend“ messages, but the other party would know. So they offered „discrete unsending“ as a premium feature. You could still unsend but it was annoying. So then they started a „window“ of how long a message was allowed to sit before you could unsend! First it was a few days, then 24 hours.. the last time I checked, it was under 1 hour.
Ultimately, this is what foced my hand… I relented and upgraded to Premium. And now Every. Damn. Day. I get an unwelcome message from the „line premium service“ trying to tell me about some annoying offering from this spammy-ass app.
Oh, and they paywalled adding videos to albums and also shunted „original quality photos“ to premium.
This app is shit, but it is unfortunately so entrenched in Japan that we’ll be stuck with it alongside the venerable fax machine.

Line official offered a free model where you could send a1000 announcements a a month for free. They kept that model for a year, giving people lots of time to fill up their contacts list, then suddenly announced that announcements would be reduced to 200 for free model and Y5000 a month for the next tier.
Absolutely criminal.

If they do this, I am switching. I am almost done with their bs. It doesn’t matter if others can’t contact me on line, contact me through email.

It’s crazy how Japan has almost a 90% iOS adoption rate yet no one uses iMessage and instead uses LINE. I get that people started using it because of the earthquake but it’s time to move on given there are so many other messaging services now
