It speaks a lot about the society when a so-called „social media influencer“ can earn hundreds of millions in yen, evade taxes for years, and when they get caught, they get a slap on the wrist with a „suspended sentence“ and fines.

Meanwhile, middle class working people get nearly half their annual income deducted automatically. Even if there’s some hope of economic respite when they inherit, say, a house or a piece of land from a deceased parent, government comes in and says, „Nope, pay inheritance and property taxes on it, or we’ll confiscate it“.

And said government have the galls to extend their dirty hands (or should I say dirty trotters?) to non-permanent residents who received inheritance from their foreign kins.
